Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to be actively running the interactive pCloud OAuth flow (rclone config or rclone authorize pcloud) so the localhost callback server is listening on the fixed, well-known port 127.0.0.1:53682, AND a malicious web page to be loaded in the victim's browser during that short window. Only the pcloud backend is affected - it is the sole backend that sets StateBlankOK:true, disabling the OAuth state check; sharefile uses the same host-trust pattern but keeps the state check and is not vulnerable. Limiting factors: exploitation is confined to the brief interactive authorization window, needs victim-side interaction (a loaded page), and the attacker needs no information from the victim because the port is fixed. Chrome's Private Network Access can block the request when issued as a subresource (though not as a top-level navigation); Firefox blocks neither.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.6 (High) is driven by severe technical impact - VC:H/VI:H - because a successful attack binds the victim's pCloud remote to an attacker-controlled host and token, so later rclone sync operations exfiltrate files (confidentiality) and return attacker-chosen content (integrity). However, the exploitability metrics temper raw urgency: AC:H, AT:P and UI:P together encode that exploitation depends on a narrow, attacker-uncontrolled window (the victim must be mid-authorization) plus victim-side interaction (a malicious page loaded in the browser at that moment). PR:N confirms the attacking web page needs no credentials. On exploitation signals, a fully author-verified proof-of-concept is published in the GHSA advisory, which materially raises feasibility, but this CVE is NOT in CISA KEV (no confirmed active exploitation) and no EPSS score was supplied, so widespread automated exploitation cannot be asserted. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with high impact gated behind a tight timing-and-interaction precondition. Net: a genuine high-severity flaw worth remediating this week, but the practical attack surface is limited to users actively running pCloud OAuth setup, pointing to opportunistic/targeted rather than mass exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

While a victim runs rclone config or rclone authorize pcloud and the localhost callback server is listening on 127.0.0.1:53682, the attacker gets a malicious web page loaded in the victim's browser. That page fires one cross-site GET to the callback with an attacker code and hostname; because the pcloud backend sets StateBlankOK, the stateless request is accepted, planting an attacker token and API host so every later transfer on that remote reaches the attacker. A fully verified, working proof-of-concept demonstrating this chain is published in the GHSA advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026

Cross-site request forgery in the pCloud backend of Rclone 1.52.0 through 1.75.1 lets a malicious web page silently rebind a victim's pCloud remote to an attacker-controlled OAuth token and API host, so subsequent rclone sync transfers upload files to the attacker and return attacker-chosen content. The flaw is reachable only while the victim is actively running the interactive authorization flow (rclone config or rclone authorize pcloud), which leaves the localhost callback listener on the fixed port 127.0.0.1:53682 open; a single stateless cross-site GET to that port during the window is accepted because the pCloud backend is the only one in the tree that sets StateBlankOK: true, disabling the OAuth state check. No KEV entry and no confirmed active exploitation were reported, but a full local proof-of-concept reproduction is published in the upstream advisory, and Rclone 1.75.2 is the fixed release.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Rclone v1.75.2 or later, the vendor-released patch version that restores a working origin/state check on the pCloud callback; the fix is available in the upstream release and detailed in the GitHub security advisory https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-hvpr-p4pv-4f46. Go-based consumers should bump github.com/rclone/rclone to v1.75.2. Because the susceptibility window is limited to the interactive flow, the exposure to unpatched hosts can be reduced by performing rclone config / rclone authorize pcloud in a browser session with no untrusted pages open, keeping the flow as short as possible, and afterwards inspecting the resulting remote configuration to confirm hostname is the expected pCloud API endpoint (not an arbitrary host:port) and that the stored token belongs to the intended account - any unexpected host value means the callback was hijacked and the remote should be deleted and the account's tokens revoked. Do not rely on browser behaviour as a control: Chrome's Private Network Access can block the cross-site request only when it is issued as a subresource (a top-level navigation is not blocked), and Firefox blocks neither, so those mitigations are partial and version-dependent. There is no configuration switch documented in the advisory that re-enables the state check for the pCloud backend, so patching remains the complete fix; note that removing the pCloud remote's stored hostname does not undo an already-performed token exchange against an attacker host.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Rclone implements OAuth 2.0 authorization-code flows for cloud backends using a localhost redirect listener (lib/oauthutil/oauthutil.go, (*authServer).handleAuth), which normally enforces a 128-bit random state value to bind the callback to the request the user started. backend/pcloud/pcloud.go opts out of that protection with StateBlankOK: true (originally added in v1.52.0, commit 78ca08ba8, because pCloud appeared to drop the state parameter, issue #4210), so any cross-site GET http://127.0.0.1:53682/?code=... carrying no state is accepted. A second weakness compounds it: checkAuth reads a hostname form value from the same unauthenticated callback and persists it into the remote's configuration (m.Set("hostname", hostname)) while rewriting oauthConfig.TokenURL to https://<hostname>/oauth2_token; because OverrideCredentials returns a single shared *Config and pCloud uses RedirectLocalhostURL, the mutation survives fixRedirect and reaches the token exchange itself. The stored hostname then becomes the REST root for the remote (pcloud.go lines 319, 327, 331), so every later transfer goes to the attacker's server. The root cause is classified as CWE-346 (origin validation error), with the advisory also tagging CWE-352 (CSRF): an unauthenticated callback-supplied parameter is trusted for both credential and endpoint selection. The sharefile backend follows the same trust-the-callback-host pattern but keeps the state check and is therefore not exploitable.

DescriptionCVE.org

Rclone from 1.52.0 before 1.75.2 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in the pCloud backend's localhost OAuth callback, which disables the state check and trusts the hostname parameter. Malicious web pages can send a stateless request to port 53682 during authorization, planting attacker tokens and API hosts so later transfers reach the attacker.

Technical POC Analysis

The pCloud backend of rclone disables the OAuth state check on rclone's own localhost callback server and then trusts a second, equally unauthenticated parameter from that same request.

Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity vulnerability in Rclone's pCloud backend (versions 1.52.0 through 1.75.1) allows a malicious webpage to hijack pCloud synchronization during the interactive authorization flow, redirecting subsequent file transfers to attacker-controlled infrastructure. This affects any employee who uses Rclone to sync with pCloud and may lead to data exfiltration and integrity loss. Leadership should prioritize remediation to protect sensitive corporate data.
