Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires ALL of the following: (1) an application using a bRPC client Channel with client-side TLS peer verification (VERIFY_PEER) enabled; (2) the connection traverses an untrusted network where an attacker can redirect or intercept it (active MITM); and (3) the client trusts a CA that can issue certificates for identities other than the intended endpoint, and the attacker holds such a certificate. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the attacker must already achieve an on-path/MITM position, must possess a valid CA-issued certificate for some other name, and only affected deployments are those NOT using HTTPS Channels (which already verify against the URL host). Deployments trusting only a tightly scoped private CA are far less exposed.

Impact

No CVSS score or vector was provided by NVD/vendor, so attack-vector and privilege signals must be inferred from the description. EPSS, KEV, and POC data are all absent from the input: there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified - only a vendor fix PR (apache/brpc#3408), which is remediation code, not weaponized exploit code. The flaw (CWE-297, improper certificate-to-host binding) is network-reachable but is NOT a trivial remote code bug: successful exploitation requires an active man-in-the-middle position AND possession of a valid certificate issued by a CA the client already trusts for a *different* name. This elevates real-world attack complexity substantially. My independent assessment is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N, yielding a High (~7.4) base score driven by confidentiality and integrity impact. This is a genuine transport-security weakness worth patching, but it is a conditional, position-dependent MITM issue rather than a mass-exploitable, internet-wide critical - treat as medium-priority unless bRPC clients traverse untrusted networks trusting broad/public CAs. Note: with no EPSS and no KEV, there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation at time of analysis.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A bRPC client with TLS peer verification enabled connects across an untrusted network to a backend service, trusting a CA capable of issuing certificates for many identities. An attacker positioned to redirect or intercept the connection presents a valid certificate that the CA issued for a different name; because bRPC validates the chain but never checks the certificate's SAN/CN against the intended endpoint, the handshake succeeds and the attacker transparently impersonates the server, reading and modifying RPC traffic. No public exploit code was identified; only the upstream fix PR exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

TLS endpoint impersonation in Apache bRPC before 1.18.0 allows an on-path attacker who can redirect or intercept a client Channel connection to present a CA-trusted certificate for a different identity and impersonate the intended TLS server, affecting confidentiality and integrity. The flaw is only reachable when client-side TLS peer verification (VERIFY_PEER) is enabled, the connection crosses an untrusted network, and the client trusts a CA capable of issuing certificates for other names; HTTPS Channels that verify the URL host are not affected. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Apache bRPC 1.18.0 (vendor-released patch) and enable VERIFY_PEER with a positive verify_depth; HTTPS Channels then verify the certificate against the host in the Channel URL automatically, and callers whose certificate identity differs from the URL host must set VerifyOptions::expected_peer_name explicitly. If upgrading immediately is not possible, apply the patch from https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3408 and, as a compensating control, use HTTPS Channels where possible or restrict the client trust store to a tightly scoped private CA that cannot issue certificates for unintended identities; note that merely enabling VERIFY_PEER without expected_peer_name on non-HTTPS Channels leaves the identity-binding gap, and setting expected_peer_name while peer verification is disabled is rejected by the new option. See the vendor advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/2pf15ojj0vr7rtx95677kgtl1mx3gdgb.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache bRPC is an RPC framework; its client Channel TLS stack validates the server certificate chain when peer verification is enabled but, before 1.18.0, does not bind the certificate to the hostname or IP address the client intended to reach. This is CWE-297, improper validation of certificate with host mismatch: chain validation alone proves a certificate chains to a trusted CA, not that the certificate was issued for the target endpoint. The exposure is specific to non-HTTPS bRPC Channels because HTTPS Channels already verify against the host in the Channel URL; non-HTTPS users must set VerifyOptions::expected_peer_name or upgrade. Version 1.18.0 adds DNS SAN/IP SAN checking during the TLS handshake and requires VERIFY_PEER with a positive verify_depth; configurations that set expected_peer_name while peer verification is disabled are rejected. CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_brpc:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all versions before 1.18.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Apache bRPC versions before 1.18.0 validate the server certificate chain when client TLS peer verification is enabled, but do not bind the certificate to an expected DNS name or IP address. A network attacker who can redirect or intercept a connection and who possesses a certificate issued by a CA trusted by the client for another name may impersonate the requested TLS endpoint.

Affected Scenarios: Applications use a bRPC client Channel to connect to an untrusted network with certificate verification enabled and trust a CA that can issue certificates for identities other than the intended endpoint.

How to Fix: Upgrade to Apache bRPC 1.18.0 and enable VERIFY_PEER with a positive verify_depth. HTTPS Channels automatically verify the certificate against the host in the Channel URL. Callers may set VerifyOptions::expected_peer_name explicitly when the certificate identity differs from the URL host. Alternatively, apply the patch from https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3408 .

Note: The new option performs DNS SAN or IP SAN verification during the TLS handshake. Configurations that set expected_peer_name while peer verification is disabled are rejected.
