Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to be an Apache bRPC HTTP server (before 1.18.0) compiled on a platform where plain char is unsigned - explicitly ARM64; x86_64 builds are NOT affected and this is the primary limiting factor. The attacker sends an unauthenticated request URI containing a byte with the high bit set (0x80-0xFF), reaching the vulnerable URL-parsing lookup. The case-insensitive header-name lookup is reachable only via APIs that process untrusted header names such as the HTTP/2 HPACK path; HTTP/1 header names with high-bit bytes are rejected by the HTTP/1 parser before reaching the sink, so HTTP/1 header-based exploitation is not possible. No authentication or user interaction is required on affected platforms.

Impact

No CVSS vector, EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is provided in the input, so quantitative exploitation signals are entirely absent and this assessment rests on the vendor description alone. Based on my independent analysis the real-world impact ceiling is a denial of service only - the out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) corrupts a table-lookup index and crashes the process rather than returning memory to the attacker, so despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag the described consequence is a process crash, not data leakage. The flaw is remotely reachable and unauthenticated (an unauthenticated request URI or HPACK-decoded header name), which raises network exposure, but it is strictly conditional on a platform where plain char is unsigned (notably ARM64); x86_64 builds, which dominate server fleets, are explicitly not affected. This platform dependency is the single most important risk modifier and means a given deployment is either exploitable by default or not exploitable at all. Net assessment: a genuine availability issue worth patching on ARM64 bRPC HTTP servers, but not a widespread critical-code-execution event - treat as medium priority, elevated only for ARM-based or heterogeneous deployments. No evidence of active exploitation exists in the provided data.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker identifies a remotely accessible Apache bRPC HTTP server running on an ARM64 (unsigned-char) build and sends an unauthenticated HTTP request whose URI contains a byte with the high bit set (0x80-0xFF), or supplies a crafted header name via the HTTP/2 HPACK path. The biased lookup table is indexed out of bounds, reading up to 127 bytes past its end and crashing the worker process, producing a denial of service. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, though the root cause is precisely documented in the vendor advisory and patch PR.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Remote denial of service affects Apache bRPC deployments before 1.18.0 when built on platforms where plain char is unsigned, notably ARM64. Unauthenticated attackers can send a crafted request URI containing a high-bit byte (0x80-0xFF) to an HTTP server, triggering out-of-bounds reads in URL parsing; the case-insensitive header-name lookup is also reachable through APIs that process untrusted header names, such as the HTTP/2 HPACK path, and the result can be a process crash. x86_64 builds with signed plain char are not affected, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 1.18.0 - upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0 or later; alternatively apply the upstream fix from https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3376. The fix normalizes lookup-table indices to the signed-char range before accessing the biased tables. If upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict network access to bRPC HTTP servers so untrusted clients cannot send request URIs, and avoid exposing HTTP/2 HPACK header-processing paths to untrusted traffic; these are compensating controls only, and the request-URI path remains reachable over HTTP/1, so limiting exposure is not a substitute for patching. Vendor advisory: https://lists.apache.org/thread/2pf15ojj0vr7rtx95677kgtl1mx3gdgb.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) in Apache bRPC's URL parsing and case-insensitive header lookup. Two 256-entry lookup tables are accessed through pointers biased by 128 so that valid indices span -128 to 127; input bytes are promoted from plain char to int without first normalizing them to the signed-char range. On platforms where plain char is unsigned, bytes 0x80-0xFF become indices 128-255 and read up to 127 bytes beyond the table. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_brpc:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies Apache bRPC as the affected product. Remotely reachable HTTP servers can hit the URL lookup with an unauthenticated request URI containing a high-bit byte; the header-name lookup is reachable via APIs that accept untrusted header names, including HTTP/2 HPACK, while HTTP/1 header names containing high-bit bytes are rejected before the vulnerable lookup. The assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, reflecting unauthenticated remote availability impact only.

DescriptionCVE.org

Out-of-bounds reads in URL parsing and case-insensitive header lookup in Apache bRPC before version 1.18.0 on platforms where plain char is unsigned, such as ARM64, allow remote attackers to cause a process crash and denial of service by sending crafted input containing bytes with the high bit set.

Root Cause: Two 256-entry lookup tables are accessed through pointers biased by 128 so that valid indices are in the range -128 to 127. Input bytes are promoted from plain char to int without first normalizing them to the signed-char range. On affected platforms, bytes in the range 0x80 to 0xFF therefore become indices 128 to 255 and read up to 127 bytes beyond the end of the underlying tables.

Affected Scenarios: A remotely accessible bRPC HTTP server on an affected platform can reach the vulnerable URL lookup through an unauthenticated request URI containing a high-bit byte. The case-insensitive lookup is also reachable when untrusted header names are processed through APIs such as the HTTP/2 HPACK path. HTTP/1 header names containing high-bit bytes are rejected by the HTTP/1 parser before reaching the vulnerable lookup. Builds where plain char is signed, which commonly include x86_64 builds, are not affected by this issue.

How to Fix: Choose one of the following options:

  1. Upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0 or later.
  2. Apply the patch from https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3376 .

The fix normalizes lookup-table indices to the signed-char range before accessing the biased tables.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
