| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions drawn from the description: (1) the affected connection must run through the SFTP provider's deferrable code paths - specifically SFTPTrigger, SFTPHookAsync, or SFTPClientPool, i.e. an SFTP sensor or operator executed in deferrable mode; (2) the connection must rely on the insecure default where the no_host_key_check extra is left unset/true, with no host_key supplied and no matching entry in known_hosts (deployments that set no_host_key_check=false, supply a host_key, or add the server to known_hosts are not exploitable); and (3) the attacker must occupy a machine-in-the-middle network position between the Airflow triggerer and the SFTP server. The MITM prerequisite is the primary limiting factor - exploitation is not possible by a remote attacker lacking network-path control - which meaningfully reduces realistic risk compared with a direct remote flaw. |
| Impact | No CVSS score, EPSS probability, or SSVC decision data is provided in the input, so quantitative exploitation signals are entirely absent and cannot be compared. Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this CVE is not in CISA KEV and no POC is referenced. The core risk is a man-in-the-middle (MITM) weakness (CWE-322): the SFTP provider's deferrable code paths (SFTPTrigger, SFTPHookAsync, SFTPClientPool) shipped with SSH host-key verification disabled by default (no_host_key_check defaulting to true), meaning the triggerer never authenticates the remote SFTP server. Realistically this is a conditional, position-dependent flaw rather than a mass-exploitable one: an attacker must already hold a network MITM vantage point between the Airflow triggerer and the SFTP server, which substantially limits opportunistic exploitation and points toward targeted/insider or compromised-network scenarios rather than widespread internet-scale attacks. Impact is meaningful where the condition is met - credentials and transferred data can be captured or manipulated - so for environments running SFTP sensors/operators in deferrable mode over untrusted network segments this warrants prompt patching, but it is not a drop-everything internet-facing RCE. Note the dependency relationship: this is explicitly a separate defect from CVE-2026-94134 (synchronous SSH hook default), and the single release apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 fixes both - teams who patched only one issue remain exposed to the other. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An Airflow deployment runs an SFTP sensor or operator in deferrable mode, and the connection leaves no_host_key_check at its insecure default. An attacker positioned on the network path between the triggerer and the SFTP server (e.g. via ARP spoofing, rogue gateway, or DNS redirection) presents a forged host key, which the triggerer accepts without verification, allowing the attacker to impersonate the server and harvest the SFTP credentials and file data during the exchange. No public exploit code is referenced, and success depends on the attacker first achieving the MITM position. |

Apache Airflow's SFTP provider (apache-airflow-providers-sftp) omits SSH host-key verification in its deferrable code paths - SFTPTrigger, SFTPHookAsync and SFTPClientPool - because the no_host_key_check connection extra defaulted to permitting unknown hosts instead of requiring a known-hosts match. Any deployment that runs SFTP sensors or operators in deferrable mode while leaving that extra unset, supplying no host_key, and having no known_hosts entry is exposed: an unauthenticated attacker who holds a machine-in-the-middle position between the Airflow triggerer and the SFTP server can impersonate the server and capture the credentials and data exchanged (CWE-322; independent assessment scores it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N). The vendor-released patch is apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0, which also fixes the sibling defect CVE-2026-94134 covering the synchronous SSH hook default; no public exploit code and no CISA KEV entry were identified at time of analysis, and the required MITM network position is the main factor limiting realistic risk.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 or later, which inverts the async default so host-key verification is enforced (no_host_key_check defaults to false) and also remediates the related CVE-2026-94134 synchronous hook default; the fix is delivered via the provider package in https://github.com/apache/airflow/pull/73419, and because the two defects are distinct you must be on a release that contains both fixes rather than assuming one patch covers the pair. After upgrading, connection configurations that previously worked may begin refusing hosts: to keep connecting, add the server's host key to known_hosts, supply host_key in the connection's extra field, or pass the new no_host_key_check=True constructor argument when building SSHHook/SFTPHook/SFTPHookAsync directly (the constructor argument takes precedence over the connection extra, and a value set on a hook handed to a deferrable SFTPOperator is propagated into its trigger). The previously non-functional ignore_hostkey_verification extra is now honored as a deprecated alias for no_host_key_check and will emit a DeprecationWarning, so migrate those connections to the new key name. If you cannot upgrade immediately, explicitly set no_host_key_check=false on affected connections or populate known_hosts for every SFTP target, which stops exploitation but breaks connections to hosts lacking a known-hosts entry; setting no_host_key_check=true restores the old behavior and re-introduces the MITM exposure, so it should only be used as a conscious, temporary trade-off. As an additional compensating control, segment the triggerer's network path so it cannot be reached by untrusted intermediaries, though this is not a substitute for the upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is an instance of CWE-322, Key Exchange without Entity Authentication, in the async/deferrable half of Apache Airflow's SFTP provider. SSH-based file transfer relies on the server presenting a host key that the client validates against ~/.ssh/known_hosts, /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts, or an explicitly supplied host_key; when that validation is skipped the SSH transport still encrypts the session but provides no assurance about whom the client is talking to, so a network-positioned adversary can complete the key exchange with its own key and proxy or harvest the session. In Airflow, deferrable SFTP work is executed out-of-process by the triggerer via SFTPTrigger, which uses SFTPHookAsync and the SFTPClientPool to open connections; unlike the synchronous SFTPHook path, these async code paths applied the permissive default of the no_host_key_check connection extra, effectively disabling host-key verification unless an operator explicitly set it to false. The upstream fix (apache/airflow PR 73419) inverts the default so that no_host_key_check defaults to false, honors the previously ignored ignore_hostkey_verification extra as a deprecated alias that emits a DeprecationWarning, adds a no_host_key_check constructor argument on SSHHook/SFTPHook/SFTPHookAsync that takes precedence over the connection extra, and carries a value set on the hook supplied to a deferrable SFTPOperator into its trigger; tests in the Amazon provider (S3ToSFTP and SFTPToS3 transfers) had to set no_host_key_check=true explicitly because those operators build their own SFTPHook from a connection id and cannot receive a pre-configured hook. The provider's CPE, cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_airflow_sftp_provider:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, matches all versions before the fix.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
The Apache Airflow SFTP provider's deferrable code paths (SFTPTrigger, SFTPHookAsync, SFTPClientPool) disable SSH host-key verification by default unless the connection explicitly sets no_host_key_check to false. Deployments that run SFTP sensors or operators in deferrable mode are affected. An attacker in a machine-in-the-middle position between the triggerer and the SFTP server can impersonate the server and capture the credentials or data exchanged.
Users of apache-airflow-providers-sftp are recommended to upgrade to apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 or later. This is a separate defect from CVE-2026-94134 (the synchronous SSH hook default, which also affects the SFTP hook); users who applied the fix for one also need this release for the other - apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 fixes both.
