Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires BOTH: (1) an affected deployment using apache-airflow-providers-ssh or apache-airflow-providers-sftp before 7.0.0 with an SSH/SFTP connection that relies on the vulnerable default - i.e. host_key is not configured AND no_host_key_check is not explicitly set to false, so unknown server keys are silently accepted; and (2) the attacker occupying an active machine-in-the-middle position on the network path between the Airflow worker and the SSH/SFTP server to present a forged host key. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the MITM foothold is a non-trivial network prerequisite (no remote-from-anywhere exploitation); deployments that already pin host_key, maintain known_hosts entries, or set no_host_key_check=false are not affected; and upgrading to provider 7.0.0 (which changes the default to secure) fully remediates. No user interaction or authentication to Airflow is needed by the attacker.

Impact

The input assigns CVSS 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), which rates this Critical, but multiple independent signals argue the real-world urgency is materially lower than that number suggests. The decisive caveat is attack complexity: exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a machine-in-the-middle position on the network path between the Airflow worker and the SSH/SFTP server. That is a precondition outside the attacker's control, so the vendor's AC:L rating is questionable - a defensible assessment is AC:H, which drops the base score to roughly 7.4. The remaining signals reinforce a lower priority: EPSS is only 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing (not actively exploited), and no public exploit code was identified. Availability impact is correctly N; the harm is confidentiality and integrity of intercepted credentials/data. Net: this is a genuine design weakness (insecure default) worth patching on a normal maintenance cadence, but it is NOT a drop-everything emergency - it is a high-CVSS, lower-real-risk issue gated behind a significant network-position prerequisite. Note the signal tension explicitly: CVSS AC:L implies easy exploitation, yet the description's requirement for an active MITM foothold implies conditions beyond attacker control - verify complexity against your network trust model.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An Airflow deployment runs SSH/SFTP tasks using a connection that relies on the default (no host_key set, no_host_key_check not explicitly false). An attacker who can intercept or redirect traffic between the worker and the target server - e.g. via ARP spoofing, rogue DHCP/DNS, or a compromised network segment - stands up a server presenting a forged host key. Because host-key verification is disabled by default, the worker accepts the impersonator and transmits the SSH/SFTP credentials and task payload to the attacker. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 16, 2026

Apache Airflow's SSH and SFTP provider hooks accept any server host key by default, so an attacker positioned as a machine-in-the-middle between an Airflow worker and an SSH or SFTP endpoint can impersonate that server and capture task credentials or transferred data. All releases of apache-airflow-providers-ssh and apache-airflow-providers-sftp before 7.0.0 are affected when a connection has neither host_key configured nor no_host_key_check explicitly disabled; the assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N, i.e. unauthenticated from the attacker's side but gated on the high-complexity MITM prerequisite, which is why the input's 9.1 rating overstates practical urgency. No public exploit code has been identified and EPSS is only 0.18% (7th percentile); vendor patches (provider 7.0.0) are released, and the related deferrable-SFTP path is tracked separately as CVE-2026-94135, which the same SFTP 7.0.0 release also fixes.

v1 Oct 15, 2026 - 22:50

Machine-in-the-middle attackers who already sit on the network path between an Airflow worker and a remote SSH or SFTP server can impersonate that server and capture the credentials or data a task transmits, because the apache-airflow-providers-ssh and apache-airflow-providers-sftp hooks historically accepted any server host key when no host_key extra was configured and no_host_key_check was not explicitly disabled. The flaw is CWE-322 (key exchange without entity authentication) and applies to connections relying on the pre-7.0.0 permissive default, including bare connections such as the bundled ssh_default (ssh://localhost with no extras); unauthenticated remote exploitation is possible per the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), but only from an on-path vantage point. Deployments that pin host_key, maintain known_hosts entries, or already set no_host_key_check=false are not affected, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to apache-airflow-providers-ssh 7.0.0 and apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 (the latter also closes the deferrable-path CVE-2026-94135); the fix is visible in upstream PR https://github.com/apache/airflow/pull/73419 and the advisories at https://lists.apache.org/thread/ksr1lztvd3zr74f8xd1hzch1ssl0l3lj and https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/173. On upgraded code the default is secure, so any deployment that relied on the old permissive behavior must proactively add the target host keys to the known_hosts file, supply a host_key in the connection's extra field, set the no_host_key_check extra to true (explicitly reintroducing the MITM exposure and therefore not recommended outside controlled lab networks), or pass no_host_key_check=True to SSHHook/SFTPHook/SFTPHookAsync when constructing hooks directly; expect these connections to start failing closed until that configuration is applied. If immediate upgrade is impossible, the compensating control is to set no_host_key_check=false on every SSH and SFTP connection and populate known_hosts or host_key, which stops unknown-key acceptance but will break tasks against hosts with stale or missing known-hosts entries and requires manual key distribution. Outbound network controls that make a worker-to-server MITM foothold impractical further reduce the residual risk while upgrades are staged, since the attack requires that network position rather than remote-from-anywhere access.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a CWE-322 (Key Exchange without Entity Authentication) weakness in the Paramiko-backed SSHHook and SFTPHook of the apache-airflow-providers-ssh and apache-airflow-providers-sftp packages (CPE: apache_software_foundation:apache_airflow_ssh_provider and apache_software_foundation:apache_airflow_sftp_provider, both < 7.0.0). The no_host_key_check connection extra historically defaulted to true, meaning SSH/SFTP sessions silently accepted unknown server keys unless a host_key was supplied or the extra was explicitly set to false, so neither the worker nor the task ever validated the peer's identity. The upstream fix in apache/airflow PR #73419 flips that default to false, adds a no_host_key_check constructor argument on SSHHook/SFTPHook/SFTPHookAsync (which takes precedence over the connection extra and is propagated into a deferrable SFTPOperator's trigger), and promotes the previously non-functional ignore_hostkey_verification extra to a deprecated alias that now emits a DeprecationWarning. The same root cause in the async/deferrable SFTP code path is covered by CVE-2026-94135 and is remediated together in apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Apache Airflow SSH provider hook disables SSH host-key verification by default: unless host_key is configured or no_host_key_check is explicitly set to false, it accepts any server key. This affects SSH and SFTP connections that rely on the default. An attacker in a machine-in-the-middle position between the worker and the SSH or SFTP server can impersonate the server and capture the credentials or data a task sends.

Users of apache-airflow-providers-ssh and apache-airflow-providers-sftp are recommended to upgrade to apache-airflow-providers-ssh 7.0.0 and apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 or later. The deferrable SFTP code paths had the same default and are covered separately by CVE-2026-94135; apache-airflow-providers-sftp 7.0.0 fixes both.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Airflow's SSH and SFTP provider packages (all releases before 7.0.0) ship with host key verification disabled by default, meaning any Airflow deployment that uses these connections without an explicitly pinned host key will silently accept an impostor server. A network-positioned attacker between an Airflow worker and a managed SSH/SFTP endpoint could capture task credentials and files in transit, potentially exposing downstream system access held by orchestration jobs. The exposure is confined to environments where an adversary can already intercept internal traffic and where connections lack a configured host key, but because Airflow often brokers privileged credentials across many systems, leadership should treat remediation as a priority rather than routine maintenance.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch. As interim hardening, configure an explicit host_key on affected SSH/SFTP connections or explicitly set no_host_key_check so the permissive default no longer applies.
