Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concrete conditions: (1) the victim must have an active authenticated Scoold session in the same browser; (2) the victim must visit or be redirected to an attacker-controlled web page (the UI:R / user-interaction requirement); and (3) the vulnerable CORS filter must be active - affected versions prior to 1.69.1 hardcode addAllowedOriginPattern("*") with setAllowCredentials(true), so no non-default tuning is needed on the server side for the reflection to occur. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the attack abuses one victim's session at a time rather than compromising the server directly, it fails if the user is logged out or uses a separate browser, and the 1.69.1 fix (cors_allowed_origins allowlist defaulting to same-origin) eliminates the reflection entirely.

Impact

This is a moderate, not top-priority, issue whose signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 5.4) correctly captures a CWE-346 origin-validation flaw: the attacker needs no Scoold privileges (PR:N) but does require a logged-in victim to visit a malicious page (UI:R), and impact is partial on confidentiality and integrity with no availability effect. No EPSS score, KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was provided in the input, so exploitation-likelihood and automatability cannot be quantified from the sources given - this must be treated as a gap, not as evidence of low risk. The practical ceiling on severity is the UI:R requirement plus the fact that only a single victim's session is abused per attack (no mass/automatable exploitation of the server itself), which keeps this well below the 'drop everything' tier despite being remotely reachable and affecting default configurations. The root cause is firmly confirmed by the vendor commit (addAllowedOriginPattern("*") combined with setAllowCredentials(true)), so the technical validity of the finding is not in doubt - only its real-world exploitation frequency is unknown.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Scoold user is lured to a malicious web page while their session is active. Attacker-controlled JavaScript on that page issues credentialed cross-origin requests to the victim's Scoold instance; because the server reflects any origin and allows credentials, the browser returns responses, letting the attacker read the user's data, questions, and configuration and trigger state-changing actions as that user. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires the victim's interaction (visiting the page) per the CVSS UI:R metric.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Cross-origin request forgery in Erudika Scoold prior to 1.69.1 lets any attacker-controlled website issue credentialed API calls against an authenticated user's session, exposing user data, questions, and server configuration, and allowing state-changing actions on the victim's behalf. The CORS filter combines a wildcard origin pattern with credential support, so any requesting origin is reflected back with Access-Control-Allow-Credentials, meaning the only barriers are that the victim must have a live Scoold session in the same browser and must be lured to the attacker's page (CVSS 3.1 5.4, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R, CWE-346). No public exploit code has been identified and the issue is not in CISA KEV; the vendor-released patch is version 1.69.1, which replaces the wildcard with a same-origin default or an explicit allowlist via the new cors_allowed_origins setting.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Scoold 1.69.1, the vendor-released patch (release notes at https://github.com/Erudika/scoold/releases/tag/1.69.1, advisory GHSA-q684-4jqv-c63c, fix commit 6412441f656984c07af147b6ba2f2fc7906b2c5c); the fix stops reflecting arbitrary Origins and instead uses the new cors_allowed_origins configuration parameter, which is empty by default and therefore restricts CORS to the server's own origin via cors.addAllowedOrigin(CONF.serverUrl()). Administrators who front Scoold with a reverse proxy or API gateway on an unpatched build should override or strip inbound Origin headers on the API paths and emit their own allowlisted Access-Control-Allow-Origin, accepting that legitimate browsers performing intentional cross-origin front-end integrations will break until the upgrade is applied; because there is no toggle in pre-1.69.1 builds to disable the wildcard while retaining a functional CORS filter, patching is the only complete fix. Additional hardening that reduces the window without eliminating the flaw includes shortening session lifetimes so a stolen or abused session has less value, requiring re-authentication for state-changing endpoints, and monitoring server and proxy logs for API requests whose Origin header does not match the deployment's own hostname. Note that these compensating controls only limit blast radius; they do not close the underlying origin-reflection condition, which persists on every version below 1.69.1.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Scoold is a Java/Spring Boot question-and-answer and knowledge-sharing platform published by Erudika; CVE-2026-55842 is a CWE-346 origin-validation error rooted in the Spring CorsConfiguration bean built by apiCorsConfiguration() in src/main/java/com/erudika/scoold/ScooldServer.java, which called addAllowedOriginPattern("*") while also calling setAllowCredentials(true). Because the CORS specification forbids sending a literal wildcard Access-Control-Allow-Origin alongside Access-Control-Allow-Credentials, Spring's pattern-matching implementation instead reflects whatever Origin header the caller supplies and echoes it together with the credentials flag, effectively granting every website credentialed cross-origin access to the API. The flaw is configuration-level rather than a memory-safety or injection bug: no server-side non-default tuning is required for the reflection to occur, and the impact is bounded to one victim's session at a time because the attacker never obtains the session token directly and gains nothing if the user is logged out or using a different browser. The upstream fix in commit 6412441f656984c07af147b6ba2f2fc7906b2c5c introduces the ScooldConfig.corsAllowedOrigins() parameter (a comma-separated allowlist, empty by default) and, when unset, falls back to cors.addAllowedOrigin(CONF.serverUrl()), eliminating the origin reflection entirely; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:erudika:scoold:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms that all Scoold releases before 1.69.1 are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

Scoold is a Q&A and a knowledge sharing platform for teams. Prior to 1.69.1, the apiCorsConfiguration() method in src/main/java/com/erudika/scoold/ScooldServer.java combines addAllowedOriginPattern("*") with setAllowCredentials(true), causing Spring to reflect any requesting origin while allowing cookies or session tokens. A malicious website visited by a logged-in Scoold user can therefore issue authenticated API requests, read user data, questions, and configuration, and trigger state-changing operations on the user's behalf. This issue is fixed in version 1.69.1.
