Exploitation Conditions

Requires that a libsmi-based consumer (smidump or any program linking libsmi) parses an attacker-controlled MIB file whose OCTET STRING DEFVAL is 512 or more octets and begins with a 0x00 byte - the specific input that drives smiValueAsString() hex rendering past the fixed 1024-byte static buffer. Exploitation is LIMITED by its local nature and the required user/pipeline action of loading the malicious MIB (UI:P): there is no remote network trigger, and environments that never process untrusted or externally sourced MIBs are not exposed. No authentication is modeled (PR:N), but the victim must actively feed the crafted file to a vulnerable consumer.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority memory-corruption bug, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H, score 6.9 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is LOCAL and requires a victim to process an attacker-supplied MIB file (UI:P), the dominant impact is availability (VA:H - a crash of smidump or any libsmi consumer), with only limited integrity (VI:L, from corruption of adjacent library globals) and no confidentiality loss (VC:N). Publicly available exploit code exists (POC via hackmd write-up) and the report comes from a credible source (VulnCheck), which raises practical likelihood. However, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation - this is POC-stage, not weaponized. The signals are coherent rather than conflicting: a local, interaction-dependent crash primitive in a parsing library. Because the vulnerable function writes past a fixed 1024-byte static buffer and corrupts adjacent globals (CWE-787), code execution cannot be fully excluded, but the description and author/vendor framing describe corruption-and-crash rather than confirmed RCE; treat memory-safety escalation as plausible-but-unproven. Net: patch in normal cycles and prioritize where libsmi parses untrusted MIBs, but it does not warrant emergency response absent KEV/active-exploitation evidence.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker distributes or submits a malicious MIB file containing an OCTET STRING DEFVAL of 512 or more octets with a leading 0x00 byte; when an analyst or automated pipeline runs smidump (or another libsmi-based consumer) against that MIB, smiValueAsString() hex-renders the value and overflows the fixed 1024-byte static buffer, corrupting adjacent library globals and crashing the process. A public proof-of-concept write-up exists, lowering the barrier to reproduction. Because the attack vector is local and requires the victim to process the file (UI:P), exploitation hinges on getting a crafted MIB into a parsing workflow.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in libsmi through 0.5.0 allows attackers to corrupt adjacent library globals via a crafted MIB file that supplies an OCTET STRING DEFVAL of 512 or more octets beginning with a 0x00 byte, causing smiValueAsString() to overflow a fixed 1024-byte static buffer during hex rendering and crash smidump or other consumers. Exploitation requires the victim to load the malicious MIB (UI:P per CVSS 4.0; UI:R per independent CVSS 3.1 assessment) and is limited to local memory corruption with high availability impact and low integrity impact. Publicly available exploit code exists.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; monitor the libsmi GitHub repository (https://github.com/amartin755/libsmi) and the VulnCheck advisory for an update. As a primary compensating control, do not process untrusted or externally sourced MIB files with libsmi-based consumers such as smidump; restrict MIB input pipelines to trusted, validated sources. Where untrusted MIBs must be handled, run parsing in a sandboxed or low-privilege environment (e.g., container, seccomp, or dedicated user account) to limit the impact of a crash or memory corruption, accepting the trade-off of reduced convenience. Application-level validation that rejects OCTET STRING DEFVALs of 512 or more octets beginning with a 0x00 byte can block the specific trigger, but this may reject legitimate MIBs and requires modifying the consuming application rather than libsmi itself. Until a patch is available, consider ASLR and memory-hardening flags for consumers, though they do not eliminate the overflow.

Technical ContextAI · show details

libsmi is a library for parsing SMI MIB modules used by SNMP management tools such as smidump. The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) in smiValueAsString() in lib/smi.c, which converts SMI values into printable strings. When rendering an OCTET STRING DEFVAL that contains non-printable bytes, for example a leading 0x00, the function selects a hex representation that expands each input byte to two hexadecimal characters. The function writes this output into a fixed 1024-byte static buffer without adequate bounds checking; an input of 512 or more octets therefore produces at least 1024 hex characters plus a terminator, overflowing the buffer and corrupting adjacent library globals. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:amartin755:libsmi:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all versions through 0.5.0 are affected, and the vulnerable code is referenced at GitHub commit c58307210fe995ec419db976eb234aebc71a9216 lines 479-566 in lib/smi.c.

DescriptionCVE.org

libsmi through 0.5.0 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in smiValueAsString() in lib/smi.c that allows attackers to overflow a fixed 1024-byte static buffer through hex rendering of OCTET STRING values. Attackers can supply a crafted MIB with an OCTET STRING DEFVAL of 512 or more octets and a leading 0x00 byte to corrupt adjacent library globals and crash smidump or other consumers.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
