Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target flight software to use the Svc::Ccsds deframer chain (TcDeframer feeding SpacePacketDeframer) and the attacker to inject a CCSDS telecommand frame onto the command/data-link path such that, after TcDeframer removes the TC header and trailer, the remaining payload is six bytes or fewer (i.e., buffer size at or below SpacePacketHeader::SERIALIZED_SIZE). No authentication within the framework and no user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N) - the deframer performs no cryptographic validation before the assertion. The principal LIMITING factor is access to the spacecraft telecommand uplink/ground-link interface, which is not generally internet-exposed; exploitation is also limited to versions prior to 4.2.0 and to topologies that actually instantiate these CCSDS components.

Impact

This is a CWE-617 reachable-assertion denial of service in NASA's F´ (F Prime) flight-software framework. The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 7.5) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw with high availability impact and no confidentiality/integrity impact - fully consistent with the description: an undersized CCSDS frame reaches an FW_ASSERT that aborts or resets the flight-software process. The signals are largely coherent, with one nuance worth flagging: the CVSS vector marks PR:N and AV:N, but 'network' here means the spacecraft telecommand/data-link path, and reaching the deframer requires the attacker to inject frames onto that command uplink - an access barrier that CVSS does not model and that materially lowers real-world exploitability for most deployments. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or POC flag was provided in the input; exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Although the fix is a trivial size check and the triggering condition (a payload of six bytes or fewer) is simple to reproduce for anyone with link access, there is no evidence of active exploitation or widespread targeting. Net: a legitimate, patch-worthy availability bug for F´ operators, but not an internet-mass-exploitation priority given both the specialized attack surface and the DoS-only impact.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with access to a spacecraft's CCSDS telecommand uplink transmits a malformed telecommand frame whose payload is six bytes or fewer after the TcDeframer strips its header and trailer. When this undersized buffer reaches Svc::Ccsds::SpacePacketDeframer::dataIn_handler, the minimum-length FW_ASSERT fires, aborting or resetting the flight-software process and denying command processing. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, but the triggering condition is simple and the fix diff publicly documents the exact vulnerable check.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Malformed CCSDS telecommand frames cause assertion-driven denial of service in NASA's F´ (F Prime) flight-software framework prior to version 4.2.0 by aborting or resetting the flight-software process. In affected topologies, a frame that leaves a payload of six bytes or fewer after the TcDeframer strips its TC header and trailer reaches Svc::Ccsds::SpacePacketDeframer::dataIn_handler, which enforces the minimum packet-length condition with FW_ASSERT instead of rejecting and returning the buffer; the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) reflects high availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss and no authentication or user interaction required within the framework. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the principal practical limitation is that the attacker must be able to inject frames onto the spacecraft telecommand uplink or command/data-link path, which is not generally internet-exposed; the issue is fixed in 4.2.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade F´ (F Prime) to 4.2.0, the vendor-released fix version (release notes at https://github.com/nasa/fprime/releases/tag/v4.2.0; advisory GHSA-4rjh-jqvx-r8j5), or apply the upstream fix in PR https://github.com/nasa/fprime/pull/4919 / commit cacdd555456bd83ab395b521d56c0330470ea798, which replaces the fatal assertions in TcDeframer and SpacePacketDeframer with size checks that log an InvalidPacket warning event and return the buffer via dataReturnOut_out. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, compensating controls must reduce an attacker's ability to place a short frame on the command path: enforce CCSDS Space Data Link Security (SDLS) authentication/encryption or equivalent command-link authentication at the ground segment or uplink gateway so unauthenticated frames never reach the deframers (trade-off: added key management and latency on the uplink, and no protection for links that cannot carry SDLS), and filter or rate-limit undersized telecommand frames at the ground station or front-end radio/bridge before they are forwarded onboard (trade-off: requires knowledge of the expected frame layout and can drop legitimate fragments if the framing assumption is wrong). Because the vulnerable condition is a fatal FW_ASSERT, monitor onboard event logs for assertion resets and treat telecommand-triggered resets as indications of exploitation attempts. Note that the 4.2.0 patch also renumbers the Ccsds FrameError enumeration (SP_INVALID_PACKET inserted at index 0), so integrators consuming those enum values in ground tooling must update their mappings; authentication requirements beyond the framework itself (for example link-layer authentication) are deployment-specific and not provided by the deframer components.

Technical ContextAI · show details

F´ (F Prime) is a component-based flight-software framework used for spaceflight and embedded applications, and the affected code lives in its CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) telecommand deframing services. Svc::Ccsds::TcDeframer and Svc::Ccsds::SpacePacketDeframer process incoming command-link buffers: TcDeframer validates and removes the TC transfer-frame header and trailer, then passes the remaining payload to SpacePacketDeframer, which checks that the buffer is larger than SpacePacketHeader::SERIALIZED_SIZE before deserializing. The root cause is CWE-617 (Reachable Assertion): the handlers used FW_ASSERT for input-validation conditions, so a buffer at or below the minimum size triggered an assertion that halts/aborts the flight-software process rather than being dropped. Because FW_ASSERT is a fatal diagnostic path, no cryptographic or authentication check precedes it and the failure mode is availability-only. The upstream fix (PR nasa/fprime#4919, commit cacdd555456bd83ab395b521d56c0330470ea798) replaces the assertions with explicit size guards that log a new high-severity InvalidPacket warning event, raise FrameError::SP_INVALID_PACKET through the errorNotify output port when connected, and return the buffer via dataReturnOut_out instead of asserting; the same patch also adds FW_DESERIALIZE_INVALID_DATA handling in Fw/FilePacket and filename-overflow guards in Svc/FileDownlink, and it renumbers the Ccsds FrameError enumeration, which is a compatibility consideration for integrators. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:nasa:fprime:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected product family.

DescriptionCVE.org

F´ (F Prime) is a framework that enables development and deployment of spaceflight and other embedded software applications. Prior to 4.2.0, Svc::Ccsds::SpacePacketDeframer dataIn_handler is vulnerable because the handler treats the minimum packet-length condition as FW_ASSERT rather than rejecting and returning the buffer. When a CCSDS telecommand frame leaves a payload of six bytes or fewer after TcDeframer removes its header and trailer, the assertion aborts or resets the flight-software process, causing denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

NASA's F´ (F Prime) flight-software framework prior to version 4.2.0 is affected by a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability that can reset or abort flight-software processes when malformed CCSDS telecommand frames are processed. Mission operations and spacecraft teams relying on affected F´ deployments could face loss of command and control availability, though exploitation requires access to the telecommand uplink or command/data-link path rather than the public internet. Leadership should prioritize identifying affected missions and limiting uplink exposure while a vendor patch is unavailable.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include restricting telecommand uplink/command-data-link access to trusted ground systems, implementing ground-segment filtering to reject CCSDS telecommand frames that leave payloads of six bytes or fewer after TcDeframer processing, monitoring for assertion-driven aborts/resets, and segmenting or rate-limiting command paths.
