| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the attacker can transmit Fw::FilePacket::StartPacket packets to the Svc::FileUplink component - i.e. access as a peer authorized on the file-uplink/command channel (reflected as PR:L). The specific flaw is that FileUplink uses the packet-supplied destinationPath verbatim, so the attacker must supply an absolute, traversing ('../'), or otherwise writable path, and the chosen location must be writable by the flight/embedded process. This is the default behavior prior to 4.3.0 - no special non-default feature toggle is needed once uplink access exists; the primary limiting factor is obtaining that uplink/command-channel access, and impact is bounded to filesystem locations writable by the process (no confidentiality disclosure). |
| Impact | This is a genuine integrity-focused risk for F´ operators, but one gated by access to the file-uplink channel rather than a wide-open remote hole. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, C:N/I:H/A:L, 7.1 High) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation requires 'a peer able to send file-uplink packets' (PR:L - an authenticated/authorized peer on the uplink interface), after which low-complexity, no-interaction packet crafting yields arbitrary file write (I:H) and potential availability loss (A:L), with no confidentiality exposure (C:N). SSVC-style reading: technical impact is partial-to-total for integrity, but exploitation is NOT automatable in the usual sense because the attacker must already hold command/uplink access to a flight or embedded system. Signals that are MISSING: no EPSS probability was provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code was supplied - the only 'source code evidence' is the vendor's own fix (PR #5320 / commit 4c8b9c0), which is a patch, not a weaponized POC. Net: a real priority for anyone running F´ below 4.3.0 with an exposed or shared uplink path, but not an internet-wide mass-exploitation candidate; the PR:L prerequisite meaningfully narrows the realistic attacker set. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can place packets on the F´ file-uplink channel - for example a compromised or rogue ground/peer node authorized to send commands - crafts an Fw::FilePacket::StartPacket whose destinationPath is an absolute or '..'-traversing path pointing outside the intended upload directory. Because Svc::FileUplink copies the packet-controlled path and opens it for writing without canonicalization or sandbox confinement, the attacker creates or overwrites files at chosen writable filesystem locations, corrupting configuration or data and potentially degrading availability. No public exploit is identified; only the vendor fix (PR #5320) is available. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Path traversal in F´ (F Prime) prior to 4.3.0 lets an authenticated peer on the file-uplink channel write or overwrite files at attacker-chosen writable filesystem locations by supplying a crafted destination path in a Fw::FilePacket::StartPacket. The flaw yields high integrity impact and limited availability impact (overwriting or damaging critical files), with no confidentiality impact, and CVSS reflects PR:L because the attacker must already be able to send file-uplink packets to Svc::FileUplink. The issue requires no non-default feature toggle once uplink access is obtained, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patch: 4.3.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade F´ to version 4.3.0 or later, which introduces the sandbox-checked file APIs (Os::SandboxedFile and Os::FilePathUtils) that reject paths outside the configured upload directory; the release is published at https://github.com/nasa/fprime/releases/tag/v4.3.0 and the advisory is https://github.com/nasa/fprime/security/advisories/GHSA-5rfj-hw2g-vwmv, with the implementation in PR https://github.com/nasa/fprime/pull/5320. Because this is embedded/flight software, the patched core must be rebuilt and redeployed to each target - an in-place binary swap is not applicable. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating controls are to restrict who can transmit FilePacket::StartPacket messages to Svc::FileUplink (the attack is gated on peer access to the file-uplink/command channel, so tightening that channel to trusted peers removes reachability), and to run the flight/embedded process under a least-privilege filesystem identity in which only the intended upload directory is writable - trade-off: legitimate uploads to any other location will fail and privileged writes by the process will be blocked, which can disrupt operations that rely on them, and this only reduces the set of attacker-writable targets rather than eliminating the missing-canonicalization flaw, so it is a stopgap and not a substitute for the 4.3.0 upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
F´ (F Prime) is a NASA-developed framework for spaceflight and other embedded software, structured as components that exchange typed packets over communication channels. Svc::FileUplink is a standard F´ component that reassembles file-transfer packets received from a ground or peer system and writes the payload to a filesystem path carried in the Fw::FilePacket::StartPacket message. In vulnerable versions, FileUplink takes the packet-supplied destinationPath verbatim and opens it for writing without canonicalization (resolving '.', '..', and duplicate slashes) and without confining the result to an intended upload directory, which is the classic CWE-22 improper-limitation-of-pathname-to-restricted-directory weakness. Because absolute paths and traversing segments are honored, the write target is fully attacker-selected, bounded only by the filesystem permissions of the flight/embedded process. The upstream fix in pull request #5320 adds Os::FilePathUtils (buildAbsolutePath and an in-place resolver that handles '.', '..', and repeated slashes) and an Os::SandboxedFile abstraction, plus a new File::Status::OUTSIDE_SANDBOX error so that paths escaping the configured sandbox directory are rejected rather than opened.

File-uplink packets arrive over a remote channel (AV:N, AC:L) but only from an authorized peer able to send uplink packets (PR:L); arbitrary file overwrite gives I:H with possible A:L and no confidentiality impact (C:N).

2DescriptionCVE.org
F´ (F Prime) is a framework that enables development and deployment of spaceflight and other embedded software applications. Prior to 4.3.0, Svc::FileUplink handling of Fw::FilePacket::StartPacket destination paths FileUplink copies the packet-controlled destinationPath and opens it for writing without canonicalization or confinement to an upload directory. When a peer able to send file-uplink packets supplies an absolute, traversing, or otherwise attacker-selected writable destination path, files can be created or overwritten at attacker-selected writable filesystem locations, affecting integrity and potentially availability. This issue is fixed in version 4.3.0.
Executive ViewAI
A path traversal flaw in the F´ (F Prime) flight software framework, versions prior to 4.3.0, allows a peer that already holds file-uplink channel access to write or overwrite files at arbitrary writable filesystem locations on affected systems. This creates a high-integrity risk for programs running F´ on spacecraft, ground stations, or embedded platforms, where corrupted binaries, configuration, or command files could degrade mission operations or require costly revalidation and recovery. Because exploitation requires an authenticated uplink peer and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, leadership should treat this as a serious but bounded engineering and supply-chain remediation priority rather than an immediate emergency.
