Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target deployment to use Svc::FileUplink and process incoming network file packets through Fw::FilePacket deserialization; the attacker must be able to deliver a file packet containing a file-packet type byte outside the valid Type enum range. The CVSS vector lists PR:N (unauthenticated) and UI:N (no user interaction), but the practical limiting factor is reachability: the malicious packet must traverse the file-uplink/command path (in spaceflight contexts, the ground-to-vehicle uplink), so defenders who gate or authenticate that channel materially reduce exposure. Impact is limited to denial of service (process abort/reset of the Ref application) on versions prior to 4.2.0.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) reflects an availability-only impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss - this is a pure denial-of-service via a reachable assertion (CWE-617), where an out-of-range file-packet type byte drives FilePacket::fromSerialBuffer into a FW_ASSERT that aborts or resets the Ref application process. The source-code evidence (PR #4919 replacing FW_ASSERT(0, status) with a FW_DESERIALIZE_INVALID_DATA return) confirms both the root cause and the fix. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public exploit was supplied in the intelligence set, so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' While the vector is nominally network-reachable and unauthenticated, real-world exploitation requires the attacker to inject a crafted file packet into the Svc::FileUplink path - in a spaceflight/embedded deployment that typically means access to the command uplink/ground-link channel, which is a meaningful practical constraint not captured by AV:N. Net assessment: a legitimate availability bug worth patching, but closer to a moderate operational-robustness issue than an urgent internet-facing emergency, given the niche deployment footprint, DoS-only impact, and absence of any exploitation or POC signal.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with access to the spacecraft/application command uplink channel sends a file-uplink packet whose header contains a file-packet type byte outside the defined Type enum range. During deserialization the unknown type reaches a default FW_ASSERT, which aborts or resets the running Ref application, denying service until recovery. No public proof-of-concept was provided, and exploitation requires reaching the FileUplink data path rather than any default internet endpoint.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Denial of service in NASA's F´ (F Prime) framework prior to 4.2.0 allows remote attackers to abort or reset the flight software process by delivering a file-uplink packet whose file-packet type byte falls outside the valid Type enum, driving Fw::FilePacket deserialization into an unvalidated FW_ASSERT (CWE-617). The impact is availability-only, matching the assessed CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) with no confidentiality or integrity loss, and the practical limiting factor is reachability: the malicious packet must traverse the Svc::FileUplink file-packet path, which in spaceflight deployments is the ground-to-vehicle uplink. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fix in F Prime 4.2.0.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: F Prime 4.2.0 - upgrade to that release (https://github.com/nasa/fprime/releases/tag/v4.2.0), which replaces the assert in Fw/FilePacket/FilePacket.cpp with a returned FW_DESERIALIZE_INVALID_DATA status and adds the corresponding enumerator in Fw/Types/Serializable.hpp, as shown in https://github.com/nasa/fprime/pull/4919 and commit https://github.com/nasa/fprime/commit/cacdd555456bd83ab395b521d56c0330470ea798; apply the build via the vendor advisory at https://github.com/nasa/fprime/security/advisories/GHSA-3534-8qg7-6cf5. Where flight software cannot be updated promptly, the highest-value compensating control is reachability reduction: disable or disconnect the Svc::FileUplink/FilePacket uplink path if file uplink is not operationally required, or restrict and authenticate the command/uplink channel so only trusted ground segments (or allow-listed endpoints) can deliver file packets - the trade-off is loss of uplink file-transfer capability or added command-path restrictions, but the CVSS PR:N/UI:N rating only reflects the vector, while in practice the packet must traverse that channel. Additional compensating measures include adding an input-length and file-packet-type range check ahead of FilePacket::fromSerialBuffer (rejecting type bytes outside the valid Type enum and returning an error instead of asserting) and deploying watchdog/safe-mode recovery so that a process abort or Ref application reset is detected and handled rather than leaving the vehicle in a degraded state; note that custom pre-validation patches must be maintained against upstream changes. Because the flaw only causes availability loss, no credential rotation or integrity remediation is required, but operators should monitor for unexpected component aborts, assertion logs, or anomalous uplink traffic that would indicate attempted exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

F´ (F Prime) is a NASA-developed flight software framework for spaceflight and other embedded applications, where components communicate over a typed port and packet abstraction. The vulnerable path involves Fw::FilePacket, the serialization class used by the Svc::FileUplink component: when a packet arrives, FilePacket::fromSerialBuffer deserializes the Header, and the header deserialization casts the incoming file-packet type byte directly to the Type enum without validating that the value is within the enum's defined range. An out-of-range type falls through to the default case in fromSerialBuffer, which executed FW_ASSERT(0, status) - an assertion that aborts the process (or resets the default Ref application) rather than returning a recoverable error, which is the classic CWE-617 Reachable Assertion pattern. The upstream fix in pull request 4919 replaces FW_ASSERT(0, status) with a returned FW_DESERIALIZE_INVALID_DATA status, adds that new status enumerator to Fw/Types/Serializable.hpp, and performs related hardening: the CCSDS SpacePacketDeframer and TcDeframer components now log warning events (SP_INVALID_PACKET, InvalidPacket) and drop undersized malformed frames instead of asserting, and Svc/FileDownlink adds FilenameSourceOverflow/FilenameDestinationOverflow guards so over-long filenames return an error rather than tripping assertions. The affected package is tracked as cpe:2.3:a:nasa:fprime:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the ENISA EUVD entry (EUVD-2026-101313) lists affected versions as fprime < 4.2.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

F´ (F Prime) is a framework that enables development and deployment of spaceflight and other embedded software applications. Prior to 4.2.0, Fw::FilePacket deserialization used by Svc::FileUplink is vulnerable because Header deserialization casts the byte to the Type enum without validating its range and FilePacket::fromSerialBuffer reaches a default FW_ASSERT. When a network file packet contains an unknown file-packet type byte, the assertion aborts or resets the default Ref application process, causing denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

NASA's F´ (F Prime) flight software framework, used across spaceflight missions, contains a denial-of-service flaw in versions prior to 4.2.0 that lets a crafted file-uplink packet abort or reset the running flight software process. Only availability is at risk - no data disclosure or command integrity loss - and the practical barrier is reachability, since the malicious packet must traverse the ground-to-vehicle file uplink path. Leadership should care because a successful trigger could interrupt mission operations on any affected spacecraft until the flight software restarts, even though no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

Attack Technique

Insecure deserialization occurs when an application converts serialized data (a stream of bytes representing an object's state) back into a living object without proper validation.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
