Exploitation Conditions

The target host must be actively PXE-booting over IPv4 or IPv6 - the vulnerable receive request for ICMP error messages is only open during that boot window, which bounds the exposure. The attacker must deliver a unicast ICMP error message addressed to the client's IP (reachable from any network distance) that exceeds the fixed 504-byte Mode.IcmpError field; the copy loop fails to restrict length and advances the destination by cumulative rather than per-fragment length, writing attacker bytes past the field. No authentication and no user interaction are required (PR:N/UI:N). Limiting factors: the deterministic outcome without further conditions is memory corruption and a DXE-core CPU exception (boot hang / denial of OS provisioning); escalation to arbitrary code execution additionally requires the attacker to know the exact target firmware build to plant a valid counterfeit event, and the attack is only possible during PXE boot (not against a running OS).

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue, consistent with the vuln.today 'act_now' decision label. The vendor (TianoCore) GHSA advisory confirms an unauthenticated, pre-boot, network-reachable memory-corruption flaw in the EDK II PXE Base Code driver that executes in the DXE phase at ring 0, before Secure Boot or measured boot validates anything - so the technical impact ceiling is maximal (the CVSS 4.0 vector reports VC/VI/VA:H and subsequent-system SC/SI/SA:H, score 9.5). Signals partly conflict and several are simply absent: no EPSS score and no KEV entry are provided, and the input contains no 'POC/Exploit: Publicly available' marker - only the vendor advisory reference - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation. The AT:P (attack requirement present) metric and the advisory's own text constrain realistic exploitation to the window while a host is actively PXE-booting, and reliable code execution additionally requires the attacker to know the exact target firmware build; these factors argue for targeted rather than opportunistic/wormable exploitation despite the critical score. The most important caveat is a patch-status conflict in the evidence: the advisory lists fix PR #13302 yet also states 'fixed in: Not patched currently,' meaning no released fixed version exists yet - verify remediation status directly with TianoCore before relying on a patch.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

While a server or workstation is PXE-booting over IPv4 or IPv6, an unauthenticated attacker on a reachable network sends a unicast ICMP error message larger than 504 bytes addressed to the client's IP. The oversized message overflows the fixed 504-byte Mode.IcmpError field in the driver's private context; an attacker who knows the target firmware build can place a counterfeit event in the same packet so CoreSignalEvent() dispatches attacker-supplied bytes in the DXE phase, otherwise the host deterministically crashes/hangs (denial of OS provisioning). No public working exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the vendor advisory describes the mechanism in detail.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026

Pre-boot remote code execution in the TianoCore EDK II PXE Base Code driver (NetworkPkg/UefiPxeBcDxe) lets an unauthenticated network attacker corrupt DXE-phase memory on any machine that is PXE-booting over IPv4 or IPv6, writing attacker-controlled bytes past the fixed 504-byte Mode.IcmpError field in the driver's private context. The reliable outcome is a DXE-core exception and hang that denies OS provisioning or recovery; escalation to arbitrary ring-0 code execution before Secure Boot or measured boot has verified anything requires the attacker to know the exact target firmware build so a counterfeit event can be planted for CoreSignalEvent() dispatch. No CISA KEV entry and no public exploit code were identified at time of analysis, but the vuln.today decision label is act_now and this is a genuine high-priority issue because the vulnerable receive path is open by default during network boot.

RemediationAI

No released patched version is confirmed at time of analysis: the upstream fix is the pull request https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/pull/13302 referenced from advisory https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/security/advisories/GHSA-99cj-7hg9-mp4m, so the immediate action is to track that PR and obtain a rebuilt firmware image from your platform vendor once it is merged and shipped, then reflash the PXE-capable firmware on affected machines. Because the fix is not yet in a tagged release, reduce the exposure window in the meantime: disable IPv4 and IPv6 PXE/network boot in firmware setup or remove those entries from the boot order on machines that do not require network provisioning - this eliminates the attack path entirely for that host but removes network-based OS deployment and recovery capability; where network boot is required, confine it to a dedicated provisioning VLAN and allow ICMP error messages to the client only from the provisioning infrastructure during the boot window, accepting that over-restrictive ICMP filtering can break path MTU discovery and diagnostic behaviour; and prefer provisioning over local media for systems that cannot be reflashed promptly. The vendor advisory states the driver fix itself is the complete remedy, so compensating controls should be treated as temporary.

Technical ContextAI · show details

EDK II is the reference open-source UEFI firmware implementation from which many vendor firmware builds derive, and NetworkPkg/UefiPxeBcDxe is the PXE Base Code driver that performs network bootstrap in the DXE phase - ring 0, executing before any operating system component is loaded, measured or verified. During PXE boot the driver keeps an ICMP error receive request open and copies each received message into the fixed 504-byte Mode.IcmpError field of its private context structure. The bounds handling in both the IPv4 handler (PxeBcIcmpErrorDpcHandle) and the IPv6 handler (PxeBcIcmp6ErrorDpcHandle) is incorrect: a message longer than 504 bytes is still copied into the field, and the destination pointer advances by the cumulative rather than the per-fragment length, so an oversized message writes past the field, with nothing earlier on the receive path restricting message length. The root cause class is CWE-120 (classic buffer overflow), with the advisory also assigning CWE-131 (incorrect calculation of buffer size) for the faulty length arithmetic and CWE-787 (out-of-bounds write) for the resulting memory corruption; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:tianocore:edk2:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the scope is the EDK II codebase itself rather than a single downstream OEM image. The CVSS v4 vector's AT:P reflects that the attack requires the target to be in the PXE-boot window; the independent assessment scores the same issue as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, treating the build-specific precondition for code execution as high attack complexity while agreeing on network reachability, no privileges, no user interaction, and changed scope.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical vulnerability in the TianoCore EDK II PXE Base Code driver, affecting all machines that network-boot via PXE, exposes organizations to unauthenticated denial-of-service and potential pre-boot code execution. Leadership should prioritize this because a single attacker on the provisioning network can halt OS deployments and recovery operations across fleets of servers and workstations, directly impacting IT's ability to provision and recover systems.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Disable PXE boot where not needed, restrict PXE provisioning networks to trusted hosts and VLANs, enable network segmentation and monitoring, and apply firmware updates as they become available.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
