MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a user to open or process a crafted capture containing malicious TIFF data in Wireshark 4.6.0-4.6.8 or 4.4.0-4.4.18 (UI:R). It is local/client-side (AV:L) - there is no remote unauthenticated path; the analyst must load the attacker-supplied file or dissect attacker-controlled traffic. Impact is limited to a recoverable application hang (availability only); no data disclosure, modification, or code execution results. This limits realistic risk to targeted social-engineering of analysts rather than mass exploitation. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-priority issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) scores 5.5 (Medium) and correctly captures a local, availability-only impact: no confidentiality or integrity loss, only a hang. Despite PR:N (no privileges), the AV:L and UI:R metrics mean this is NOT remotely exploitable - an analyst must actively open a crafted capture file or process malicious TIFF-carrying traffic in Wireshark. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC identified at time of analysis, so no signal suggests active or automatable exploitation. CWE-835 (infinite loop / unreachable exit condition) produces a recoverable denial of service - the analyst kills and restarts the process - rather than memory corruption or code execution. All available signals are consistent: modest CVSS, availability-only, local vector, no exploitation evidence. This is a routine dissector-hardening fix, not a priority patch. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malformed TIFF stream inside a packet capture (or on a monitored network segment) and induces a network analyst to open or dissect it in a vulnerable Wireshark build. The TIFF dissector enters an infinite loop, hanging the application until it is force-killed. No public exploit code has been identified, and exploitation requires the victim to load the crafted data (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026
Malformed TIFF data processed by Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.8 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 causes the TIFF protocol dissector to loop indefinitely, hanging the application until it is killed manually. Exploitation is local and client-side (AV:L, UI:R): an attacker must convince an analyst to open a crafted capture file or dissect attacker-controlled traffic containing the malicious TIFF payload, and no privileges are required (PR:N). Impact is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H, CVSS 5.5) with no data disclosure, modification, or code execution, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis - this is a genuine but low-priority issue whose realistic risk is targeted social engineering of analysts rather than mass exploitation.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch version is confirmed in the available data, so consult https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-107.html and the upstream work item https://gitlab.com/wireshark/wireshark/-/work_items/21565 for the fixed releases and upgrade to a build newer than the affected ranges - i.e., newer than 4.6.8 on the 4.6.x branch or newer than 4.4.18 on the 4.4.x branch - remembering to patch both GUI and CLI (tshark) installs. Where immediate upgrading is not possible, mitigate by disabling the TIFF dissector entirely (Analyze > Enabled Protocols > uncheck TIFF, or the equivalent tshark protocol-disable option) so crafted TIFF payloads are no longer parsed; the trade-off is that legitimate TIFF dissection is lost and the bytes are still counted as undecoded data. Additional compensating controls include only opening capture files from trusted sources and running analysis in a disposable VM or container with a CPU/memory cap so a hang is contained and the process can be killed, accepting the operational cost of a sandboxed workflow; because the trigger is user interaction (UI:R) with an attacker-supplied file or stream, user awareness of spear-phishing style capture deliveries is the practical backstop until patched builds are deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wireshark's TIFF protocol dissector parses Tagged Image File Format structures, including the Image File Directory (IFD) chain, which is a linked list of offsets that classic TIFF files use to describe image tags and their values. The root cause is CWE-835, a loop with an unreachable exit condition: a crafted file can steer the dissector into a parsing loop (for example through a self-referencing or cyclic IFD offset chain or a malformed offset/value pointer) that never reaches a terminating condition, so the dissector never returns control. Because Wireshark dissectors execute in the main application thread, the affected packet-handling loop consumes CPU and freezes the GUI, making the whole application unresponsive rather than crashing cleanly. The CPE data identifies the affected product as cpe:2.3:a:wireshark_foundation:wireshark:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* - the Wireshark Foundation's Wireshark distribution, covering both the 4.6.x and 4.4.x maintenance branches named in the description - and the same dissector code is used by the bundled tshark/dumpcap tooling, so CLI-driven analysis of the same payload is equally susceptible. This is a dissection-time robustness bug rather than a memory-safety flaw, which is why the assessed impact is limited to a recoverable hang (availability only) and not to code execution or data exposure.
