Exploitation Conditions

Three conditions must simultaneously be true for exploitation: (1) the target application uses the MongoDB Java Driver's GridFS client API for file storage operations (find, rename, or delete); (2) the application accepts externally-supplied input (e.g., from an authenticated HTTP request) and passes that input as the file identifier argument to a GridFS operation without first validating it as a plain ObjectId literal; and (3) the attacker holds at least low-privilege authenticated access to the application (PR:L per CVSS). Applications that use GridFS but derive all file identifiers from internal state (e.g., database-generated ObjectIds that are never echoed back to or accepted from users) are not exploitable. No special platform, non-default MongoDB configuration, or network position is required beyond an authenticated application session.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.1 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:H reflects a nuanced picture: while integrity and availability impacts on the vulnerable system are rated High (file deletion and arbitrary rename), the AT:P (attack requirements present) metric acknowledges that exploitation is conditional on a specific application code pattern. Practically, this means the risk is not universal - only applications that use the MongoDB Java Driver's GridFS API and pass user-controlled input as file identifiers without sanitization are exposed. EPSS data is absent from the provided intelligence; KEV status is negative and no POC is publicly referenced, indicating no confirmed active exploitation or weaponized proof-of-concept at time of analysis. The availability impact is particularly severe: deletion of all file chunks in a bucket is a destructive, potentially irreversible action if backups are absent. The confidentiality impact is rated Low (limited to content readable within the affected bucket rather than cross-bucket or server-wide). Real-world risk is moderate to high for applications with the vulnerable code pattern but low for deployments that do not expose GridFS identifiers to user input.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privilege account in an application backed by MongoDB Java Driver submits a crafted file identifier - for example, a JSON object containing a $exists or $gt operator - through a feature such as a file download or rename endpoint. The Java Driver constructs a BSON filter that interprets this as a query condition, matching all files in the GridFS bucket rather than the specific file. Depending on which operation is triggered, the attacker can dump the contents of all matched file chunks (information disclosure) or invoke a delete that strips all chunk documents from the bucket, permanently destroying stored content for all users.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

NoSQL injection in the GridFS component of the MongoDB Java Driver allows an authenticated low-privilege user who can influence the file identifier passed by an affected application to break out of the intended document scope. By supplying a structured identifier containing MongoDB query operators instead of a literal file ID, the attacker can read file chunks belonging to other owners, delete all file chunks in the affected GridFS bucket (rendering stored content permanently unreadable), or rename an arbitrary stored file rather than the intended target. No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry has been identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires a specific application code pattern that forwards user-controlled input directly to GridFS operations without sanitization.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the fixed version of the MongoDB Java Driver once it is tagged and published following resolution of JIRA-6283 (https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/JAVA-6283); monitor that ticket and the MongoDB Maven artifact (org.mongodb:mongodb-driver-sync or legacy mongo-java-driver) for a patched release. As an immediate compensating control, audit all application code paths that pass externally-derived values (user input, API parameters, HTTP query strings) to GridFS operations such as find, rename, and delete, and enforce that identifiers are validated as ObjectId literals before use - for example, by parsing with new ObjectId(userInput) and catching exceptions, rejecting non-ObjectId-shaped values. This eliminates the operator-injection surface without waiting for the upstream patch. A secondary control is to apply GridFS-level access controls at the application layer so that users can only supply identifiers corresponding to their own files, limiting blast radius even if injection succeeds. Note that bucket-level MongoDB RBAC does not directly prevent this attack since the driver query is authenticated by a legitimate low-privilege credential.

Technical ContextAI · show details

GridFS is a MongoDB convention for storing large binary files by splitting them into chunks stored across two collections (fs.files and fs.chunks). The MongoDB Java Driver implements GridFS client-side operations including findOne, rename, and delete by constructing BSON query filters. CWE-943 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Data Query Logic) describes the root cause: when user-supplied input that is meant to be a literal scalar identifier is instead interpreted as a structured BSON document containing query operators (e.g., $gt, $regex, $where), the driver's filter construction treats it as a condition rather than a value equality check. This is the NoSQL analog of SQL injection. Affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:mongodb:java_driver:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all versions of the MongoDB Java Driver prior to the fix referenced in JIRA-6283. The flaw is in driver-side logic, not the MongoDB server itself.

DescriptionCVE.org

Improper neutralization of special elements in data query logic in the GridFS component of the MongoDB Java Driver can cause a caller-supplied structured file identifier to be interpreted as a query condition rather than as a literal identifier. An authenticated user who can influence the identifier passed by an affected application may obtain stored file content beyond the intended target or cause all GridFS file chunks in the affected bucket to be removed, rendering stored file content unreadable. The affected rename operation may also rename a stored file other than the intended target.

Attack Technique

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

NoSQL injection exploits databases that don't use traditional SQL syntax-like MongoDB, CouchDB, or Redis-by manipulating queries through unsanitized user input.
