DescriptionCVE.org

Firefox for iOS hosted Reader mode on an unauthenticated local web server, allowing another application on the same device to request arbitrary URLs and receive the response rendered with the signed-in user's cookies. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox for iOS 151.0.

AnalysisAI

Firefox for iOS Reader mode exposed an unauthenticated local HTTP server on the device, enabling a co-installed malicious application to request arbitrary URLs through that server and receive responses rendered with the authenticated user's session cookies. Affected versions are all Firefox for iOS releases prior to 151.0, confirmed by Mozilla Security Advisory MFSA2026-49. No public exploit code has been identified and CISA SSVC rates exploitation as none at time of analysis, but successful exploitation would allow silent exfiltration of authenticated web content from the victim's active browsing session.

Technical ContextAI

Firefox for iOS implements a Reader mode feature that strips web pages to their core readable content. To facilitate this rendering, the browser hosted a local web server on the device - accessible via the loopback or local network interface - without requiring any authentication to connect. The CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) root cause reflects that this server exposed the browser's rendering pipeline, including the authenticated HTTP context (cookies, session tokens), to any process capable of reaching it on the same device. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:mozilla:firefox_for_ios:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all Firefox for iOS versions are affected until the fix in 151.0. The CVSS adjacent attack vector (AV:A) is consistent with a localhost/same-device IPC attack surface rather than a remotely routable network exposure, meaning the threat model is inter-process communication between apps on the same iOS device.

RemediationAI

Update Firefox for iOS to version 151.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patch per Mozilla Security Advisory MFSA2026-49 (https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-49/). The update is available through the Apple App Store. Until the update can be applied, users on older versions should avoid using the Reader mode feature, as that is the component that instantiates the unauthenticated local server; disabling or not invoking Reader mode removes the attack surface entirely without side effects to core browsing functionality. Organizations with mobile device management (MDM) capabilities should enforce the minimum version 151.0 policy for Firefox for iOS across managed devices. Additional context is available in the Mozilla bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2036618.
