Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already occupy a 'privileged network position' - an active on-path/man-in-the-middle foothold on the traffic path to the target device - per the vendor description; this is the primary limiting factor and is reflected by AC:H. No authentication is needed (PR:N) and no user interaction is required (UI:N), but the on-path precondition means this cannot be launched by an arbitrary remote Internet attacker against a device behind normal network boundaries. Affected deployments are iOS/iPadOS versions before 26.7 (26.x line) and before 27; devices updated to iOS/iPadOS 26.7 or 27 are not exploitable. Impact is limited to availability (DoS) with no data exposure or code execution.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity denial-of-service flaw (CVSS 5.9, availability-only impact: C:N/I:N/A:H) whose real-world exploitability is meaningfully constrained. The CVSS vector itself tempers the score: although AV:N makes it network-reachable and PR:N/UI:N require no authentication or user interaction, AC:H reflects the hard precondition stated in the description - the attacker must already hold a 'privileged network position' (i.e., an active man-in-the-middle or on-path foothold), which is not trivially obtained. All exploitation signals point the same direction and reinforce the low-urgency read: CISA SSVC lists Exploitation as 'none', Automatable 'no', and Technical Impact 'partial'; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified; no EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified here. The signals are therefore consistent rather than conflicting - a high-reach but availability-only bug gated behind an on-path precondition. Net: this is a patch-in-normal-cycle issue, not an emergency, despite affecting an enormous install base. One data caveat: the input Tags label this 'Information Disclosure', which contradicts the description and the CVSS impact metrics (no confidentiality impact; it is a pure DoS) - treat the tag as erroneous.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already achieved a privileged on-path/man-in-the-middle position on the network between a victim iPhone or iPad and its destination injects or manipulates malformed traffic that the OS fails to validate correctly (CWE-20). The crafted input triggers the denial-of-service condition, disrupting availability of the affected service or device function. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, and the attack is non-trivial given the required network position (AC:H).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

Denial-of-service in Apple's iOS and iPadOS (26.x releases before 26.7, and versions before 27) allows an attacker who already holds a privileged on-path network position to degrade or halt availability on the target device; there is no confidentiality or integrity impact (CVSS 5.9, C:N/I:N/A:H, AC:H/PR:N/UI:N). Exploitation is gated by the on-path precondition - the attacker must already sit on the traffic path as a man-in-the-middle - so this cannot be triggered by an arbitrary remote Internet attacker against a device behind normal network boundaries, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. Affected devices are fixed by updating to iOS/iPadOS 26.7 or 27.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7, and iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 - upgrading to either release resolves the input-validation defect, with the details in Apple's advisories at https://support.apple.com/en-us/149034 and https://support.apple.com/en-us/149041. Because the sole precondition for exploitation is an on-path network foothold, the effective interim controls are network-path controls: restrict affected devices to trusted, encrypted Wi-Fi (WPA3/802.1X) and avoid open or captive-portal networks where an attacker can insert themselves, accepting the trade-off of reduced connectivity convenience; route sensitive device traffic through a VPN with integrity protection so on-path tampering is detectable, at the cost of added latency and infrastructure dependency; and segment networks so that a compromised host cannot easily gain a man-in-the-middle position (block ARP/NDP spoofing, enforce DHCP snooping and dynamic ARP inspection on switches), which requires managed network gear and configuration effort. On the endpoint side, monitor for rogue access points and unexpected TLS/network anomalies to detect an attacker who has already achieved the privileged position; this is detective only and does not remove the underlying flaw. No vendor workaround short of updating is documented.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is classified as CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation): per Apple's advisory, malformed input reaching a network-facing component is not correctly validated and is handled in a way that consumes or corrupts resources, yielding a denial-of-service. The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H maps precisely onto the vendor's stated prerequisite - the attacker must occupy a 'privileged network position', i.e. an active on-path/man-in-the-middle foothold on traffic destined for the device, which is what raises the attack complexity to High. Because PR:N and UI:N apply, the attacker needs no credentials on the device and no action by the user; the barrier is purely network positioning, not authentication or user interaction. CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:apple:ios_and_ipados:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) and the EUVD affected ranges ('0 < 27' and '0 < 26.7') confirm this is an operating-system-level flaw in the shared iOS/iPadOS codebase rather than a third-party app. Note that the supplied tag metadata includes 'Information Disclosure'; that tag is not supported by the advisory text or the assessed vector, both of which describe availability-only impact, so it should be treated as low-confidence metadata rather than an indication of data exposure. CISA SSVC rates exploitation as 'none', automatable as 'no' and technical impact as 'partial', consistent with a difficult-to-reach, availability-limited defect.
