1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a local, low-privilege app already installed and running on the affected Apple device (AV:L, PR:L) - there is no remote or network vector and no user interaction beyond running the app. The app leverages a permissions weakness to read a persistent account identifier it should not be authorized to access. Limiting factors: attacker must first get a malicious app onto the device (App Store review, sideloading constraints, or MDM), impact is confined to disclosure of an identifier (C:L only, no write or system compromise), and the flaw is fixed in iOS/iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Tahoe 26.7, and tvOS/visionOS/watchOS 27, so patched devices are not exposed.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and all signals agree. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) yields a base score of 3.3 (LOW), reflecting a local-only, low-privilege attack with only limited confidentiality impact (C:L, no integrity or availability impact). EPSS is 0.19% (9th percentile), consistent with the low CVSS and the local vector - mass exploitation is implausible for a bug requiring code already running on the device. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC identified, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The impact is narrow: a local app reads a persistent account identifier, which is a privacy/tracking concern (cross-app or cross-reset user correlation) rather than a path to credential theft or code execution. Note a labeling gap: the CVSS C:L rating scores this below its sensitive-data sibling CVEs (which are C:H/5.5) precisely because a persistent identifier is a smaller leak than full user data - that distinction is correct here. No key signals conflict; the only data note is that CWE is N/A in the input (a privacy exposure, CWE-359/CWE-200, would fit).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user installs a seemingly benign app from the App Store; once running locally on the device, the app abuses insufficient permission restrictions to read a persistent account identifier it should not have access to. It uses that stable identifier to fingerprint and track the user across app installs or resets, or correlates the user across data brokers, defeating Apple's privacy boundaries. No public exploit code is known, and the attack requires the malicious app to already be running locally.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 17, 2026

A locally installed app on unpatched Apple platforms can read a persistent account identifier it is not authorized to access, handing the app a stable value that could be used to correlate or track a user across apps and sessions. Impact is confined to privacy-relevant information disclosure: the assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N (3.3), meaning a low-privilege app must already be installed and running on the device, with no remote or network vector and no user interaction beyond launching that app. Affected are iOS and iPadOS before 27, macOS before 27 (Golden Gate) and before 26.7 (Tahoe), tvOS before 27, visionOS before 27, and watchOS before 27, all of which now have fixed releases. This is a low-priority issue overall: exploitation is not confirmed, no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is just 0.19% (9th percentile).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available, so the primary fix is to upgrade each affected platform to its fixed version: iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27 or macOS Tahoe 26.7 (use the Tahoe 26.7 update if staying on the 26.x line), tvOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27; Apple's per-platform advisories are at https://support.apple.com/en-us/149034 through https://support.apple.com/en-us/149035, https://support.apple.com/en-us/149036, https://support.apple.com/en-us/149037, https://support.apple.com/en-us/149038 and https://support.apple.com/en-us/149042. Because exploitation requires a locally installed low-privilege app, the most effective compensating control is to keep that surface narrow until devices are patched: enforce MDM app allowlisting and block sideloaded or unmanaged apps on managed fleets (trade-off: reduced user flexibility and possible friction for line-of-business software), and restrict installation of untrusted profiles or apps on personally owned devices. Where an identifier-leak concern is acute, treat the persistent account identifier as potentially compromised for affected devices and rotate or invalidate account-linked tokens or identifiers that could be correlated with it - this carries a re-authentication and re-enrollment cost and may disrupt analytics or advertising integrations that depend on stable identifiers. Detection and monitoring are limited here because the activity is a normal API call from a permitted app, but reviewing apps that request identity data and auditing MDM-installed software provides some visibility. Given CVSS 3.3, EPSS 0.19% (9th percentile), no confirmed exploitation, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, patching should be handled through normal update cycles rather than emergency response, with the caveat that devices remaining on older OS releases stay exposed indefinitely.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw sits in Apple's application permission and sandboxing model, where access to identity-related APIs is gated by entitlements, sandbox rules, and privacy controls rather than by the OS returning data unconditionally. Apple's description states a permissions issue was addressed with additional restrictions, which points to a missing or insufficiently enforced authorization check on the API that surfaces a persistent account identifier, and it means the root cause is an access-control boundary defect rather than memory corruption or a logic error reachable for code execution. No CWE identifier was assigned in the supplied data, but the class corresponds to improper authorization/access control (CWE-284) resulting in exposure of sensitive information (CWE-200). The affected resource is significant because a persistent account identifier remains stable across sessions and device or app lifecycle changes, making it valuable for fingerprinting, cross-app tracking, ad attribution, and linking an account to identifiers harvested from other sources; only confidentiality is affected (C:L), with no integrity or availability impact, no scope change, and no path to further compromise of the device. The CPE entries (apple:ios_and_ipados, apple:macos, apple:tvos, apple:visionos, apple:watchos with wildcard versions) confirm the issue spans every Apple OS family, and the EUVD affected-version data (all families before 27, macOS before 26.7) matches the fixed-version list in the description.
