Exploitation is straightforward once a serveStatic() endpoint is identified - no auth, no interaction, no complexity beyond crafting the encoded URL.

h3 (npm package) versions <= 2.0.1-rc.14 contain a path traversal vulnerability in serveStatic(). On Node.js deployments, event.url.pathname is not normalized, so percent-encoded dot segments (%2e%2e) are passed to decodeURI() and decoded to ../ sequences without sanitization. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send crafted requests to endpoints served by serveStatic() to read arbitrary files outside the intended static directory. Fixed in 1.15.6 and 2.0.1-rc.15.
AnalysisAI
Path traversal in h3's serveStatic() function on Node.js allows unauthenticated remote attackers to read arbitrary files outside the configured static root directory. The root cause is that h3 uses srvx's FastURL class, which skips WHATWG URL normalization for performance - percent-encoded dot segments (%2e%2e) survive raw into decodeURI(), are decoded to ../, and are passed unsanitized to filesystem callbacks. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The target Node.js application must use h3's serveStatic() API with filesystem-backed getMeta() and getContents() callbacks (the standard documented usage). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.2 with AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N accurately reflects that the attack is network-accessible with no authentication, but carries an Attack Requirements condition (AT:P) - the application must be actively using serveStatic() with filesystem callbacks, which is not a universal deployment pattern. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade h3 to version 1.15.6 (stable channel) or 2.0.1-rc.15 (release candidate channel). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
