Network-reachable and unauthenticated (AV:N/PR:N), but AC:H because resolving microsecond plaintext-`==` timing deltas needs many clean low-latency samples; recovered password fully discloses the credential (C:H), no integrity/availability impact.

LightRAG provides simple and fast retrieval-augmented generation. Prior to 1.5.5, verify_password in lightrag/api/passwords.py compares plaintext AUTH_ACCOUNTS password values with Python's == operator. The comparison can return after the first mismatching byte, creating response-time differences based on password length and matching prefixes. A network attacker with sufficiently low-latency access can repeatedly query the /login endpoint and use the timing oracle to recover a plaintext-configured password character by character. Deployments using bcrypt-prefixed password values are not affected by this comparison path. This issue is fixed in version 1.5.5.
AnalysisAI
Password recovery via a timing oracle in LightRAG's /login endpoint lets remote, unauthenticated attackers (CVSS PR:N/UI:N) reconstruct plaintext AUTH_ACCOUNTS passwords one character at a time by measuring microsecond-scale response-time differences in Python's short-circuiting '==' comparison, but only in deployments that store credentials as plaintext rather than bcrypt-prefixed values. The attack requires high attack complexity (AC:H) - low-latency network positioning, many samples to overcome jitter, and credentials short or simple enough to recover before noise or rate limiting defeats the oracle. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires the deployment to store at least one AUTH_ACCOUNTS credential as a plaintext value rather than a bcrypt-prefixed hash - bcrypt-configured accounts are explicitly not affected because they use a different comparison path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but low-priority timing side-channel (CWE-208), not a high-CVSS emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to LightRAG v1.5.5, which is the vendor-released patch: it replaces the short-circuiting '==' comparison in lightrag/api/passwords.py with hmac.compare_digest, adds a dummy bcrypt verification so unknown usernames and plaintext accounts take the same ~100 ms path as {bcrypt} accounts, offloads verification via asyncio.to_thread to prevent event-loop starvation, and adds login rate limiting. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
