| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a camel-http endpoint configured with credentials - an OAuth2 bearer token (registered via OAuth2ClientConfigurer with addRequestInterceptorFirst) or basic/digest credentials (registered against an AuthScope matching any host) - AND followRedirects=true on that endpoint. The attacker must be, control, or be able to influence the responses of the remote server the route targets, so that it can return a redirect (Location header) to an attacker-chosen host. Limiting factors: followRedirects is not enabled by default, credentials must actually be configured on the endpoint, and the attacker must sit in the response path (be the endpoint, compromise it, or MITM it) - a route pointing only at a fully trusted, attacker-uninfluenceable server is not exploitable. Mitigation without upgrade is setting followRedirects=false on credentialed endpoints. |
| Impact | The reported CVSS of 7.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) captures a serious confidentiality impact - theft of OAuth2 bearer tokens or configured basic/digest credentials - but AC:L overstates the ease of exploitation when read against the description. Real exploitation is conditional: the affected camel-http endpoint must be configured with credentials AND with followRedirects=true, and the attacker must control or be able to influence the responses of the remote server the Camel route connects to (so it can answer with a redirect to an attacker-chosen host). I therefore assess AC:H rather than AC:L. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. Net: this is a genuine credential-leak flaw worth prioritizing for Camel deployments that both carry credentials and follow redirects, but it is not an internet-wide unauthenticated pre-auth RCE - the required credential configuration, non-default followRedirects=true, and attacker position in the response path meaningfully narrow the exploitable population. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A Camel route is configured to call a remote HTTP(S) endpoint using an OAuth2 bearer token or basic/digest credentials with followRedirects=true. The remote server (either malicious, compromised, or manipulable by an on-path attacker) answers with an HTTP 3xx redirect whose Location header points to a host the attacker controls; because the auth interceptor re-runs on every redirect hop and credentials were scoped to any host, Camel re-attaches the Authorization: Bearer token or the configured credentials to the attacker's host, handing them over. No public exploit code was provided, but the mechanism is fully documented in the vendor advisory and patch PRs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Credential disclosure in the Apache Camel camel-http component lets a malicious or compromised remote endpoint harvest OAuth2 bearer tokens and basic/digest credentials by answering a request with an HTTP redirect to a host it controls. The leak occurs because OAuth2ClientConfigurer's request interceptor sits in ProtocolExec, below RedirectExec, so 'Authorization: Bearer' headers are re-attached on every redirect hop, and because basic/digest credentials were registered against an AuthScope that matched any host. Affected are Apache Camel 4.0.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0; exploitation requires an endpoint with credentials configured and followRedirects=true (not the default) plus an attacker positioned to influence the target server's responses, and no public exploit code or active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to the LTS releases 4.18.5 (4.18.x stream) or 4.22.1 (4.22.x stream); the fixes are in pull requests https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25830, https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25937 and https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25938, and the advisory is at https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-85251.html. After upgrading, credentials are sent only to the authority the endpoint was configured with and are not re-attached when a redirect crosses to another host, so no route changes are required. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, set followRedirects=false on every camel-http endpoint that carries credentials - this is the direct compensating control, at the cost of breaking legitimate redirect-following behaviour, so any redirect must then be handled explicitly in the route (for example via a recipient list or a second endpoint) so that the destination is chosen by the route rather than by the remote server. Also restrict credentialed endpoints to servers whose responses cannot be influenced by untrusted parties, and rotate any OAuth2 bearer tokens or basic/digest secrets that may have transited a redirect to an unexpected host.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache Camel's camel-http component wraps Apache HttpClient and builds its exec chain as RedirectExec sitting above ProtocolExec. OAuth2ClientConfigurer registers its bearer-token interceptor with addRequestInterceptorFirst, which places it at the protocol level; consequently the interceptor executes again for each redirect hop performed by RedirectExec, re-attaching the Authorization header to whatever authority the Location header names. On the basic/digest side, DefaultAuthenticationHttpClientConfigurer called credentialsProvider.getCredentialsProvider(host, null, defaultcreds), and when authHost was unset (the common configuration) this resolved to new AuthScope(null, -1) - any host, any port, any scheme - so credentials were offered to the redirect target as well. The root cause class is CWE-200, Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor: credentials scoped to one authority are transmitted to a different, attacker-selected authority. The fix threads the target URI through HttpComponent into the configurer so the AuthScope is pinned to the endpoint's scheme/host/port and the bearer interceptor is bound to the configured authority rather than the current request authority. CPE data identifies the affected package as apache_software_foundation:apache_camel.

DescriptionCVE.org
Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor vulnerability in Apache Camel HTTP component.
This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.
Two paths handed credentials to a redirect target, which is a host chosen by the remote server rather than by the route, once followRedirects=true. OAuth2ClientConfigurer registers its interceptor with addRequestInterceptorFirst, and HttpClient runs protocol-level request interceptors inside ProtocolExec, which sits below RedirectExec in the exec chain; the interceptor therefore ran again for every redirect hop and re-attached Authorization: Bearer to whatever host the Location header named. Separately, credentials were registered against an AuthScope matching any host, so basic and digest credentials were presented to a redirect target as well. A remote endpoint - or anyone who can influence its responses - could therefore collect the bearer token or the configured credentials simply by answering with a redirect to a host it controls.
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. Credentials are now sent only to the authority the endpoint was configured with, and are not re-attached when a redirect crosses to another host. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, set followRedirects=false on endpoints that carry credentials, and handle any redirect explicitly in the route so that the destination is chosen by the route rather than by the remote server.

Executive ViewAI
A credential-handling flaw in the Apache Camel camel-http component can cause OAuth2 bearer tokens and basic/digest credentials to be resent to an attacker-controlled host when an outbound request is redirected, affecting Camel 4.0.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0. Any team using Camel integrations to call external or third-party APIs with stored credentials is exposed, since a leaked token can grant access to downstream systems well beyond the original integration. Exposure is narrowed by the fact that redirect following is not enabled by default, so leadership should prioritize discovery of affected integrations over broad emergency remediation.
