Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold any valid authenticated Nginx UI account (PR:L) on an instance running a version prior to 2.4.1 in its default configuration - no special feature or non-default setting must be enabled; the flaw is that the POST /api/users/:id user-management endpoint omits the RequireSecureSession step-up that the self-service password-change path enforces. The limiting factor is the need for a pre-existing low-privilege account: single-admin deployments that never provision secondary users have no untrusted principal to abuse, whereas any multi-user deployment is directly exposed. No user interaction and no 2FA/secure-session step-up are needed once a low-privilege session exists.

Impact

This is a credible, prioritizable vulnerability rather than a paper-high score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) and the 8.7 (High) score are internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable, low-complexity authorization flaw (CWE-285) exploitable by any authenticated low-privilege user with no victim interaction. The VC:H/VI:H/VA:H impact is well justified because successful exploitation yields full takeover of the initial administrator account - effectively total control of the Nginx UI instance and, by extension, the managed Nginx configuration. The one tempering signal is PR:L: the attacker must already hold a valid authenticated account, so this is privilege escalation, not fully unauthenticated compromise, which lowers the realistic blast radius for instances that do not provision low-trust user accounts. No CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code are present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the only exploitation-adjacent artifact is the vendor patch/commit, which is remediation evidence, not a POC. EPSS and SSVC data were not supplied and cannot be reasoned about. Net: treat as a high-priority patch for any multi-user Nginx UI deployment, but widespread opportunistic exploitation is unproven.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An organization runs Nginx UI (pre-2.4.1) with more than one account - for example a read-only operator account. That low-privilege user sends a POST to /api/users/:id targeting the administrator's ID to set a new password, bypassing the RequireSecureSession step-up that the self-service password-change path enforces. Existing admin tokens are invalidated and the attacker logs in as administrator with full control. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, though the fixed release and patch commit are published.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Privilege escalation in Nginx UI lets any holder of an authenticated account take over the built-in administrator by changing the admin's password through POST /api/users/:id, which omits the RequireSecureSession step-up that the self-service password-change path enforces. Successful abuse silently invalidates the legitimate administrator's existing tokens, and the attacker can then authenticate as the administrator with full control over the Nginx configuration managed by the UI. All releases prior to 2.4.1 are affected; the vendor-released fix is version 2.4.1, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, though the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The practical exposure is gated by the need for a pre-existing low-privilege account, so multi-user deployments are directly at risk while single-admin instances that never provision secondary users have no untrusted principal to abuse.

RemediationAI

Primary fix: upgrade Nginx UI to version 2.4.1 or later, which applies RequireSecureSession to the administrative user-management endpoint and additionally guards the backup endpoints (Vendor-released patch: 2.4.1; upstream commit 23d1934099b05b2a01589b48129dc3d3159d91c2, release notes at https://github.com/0xJacky/nginx-ui/releases/tag/v2.4.1, advisory at https://github.com/0xJacky/nginx-ui/security/advisories/GHSA-2gc7-j998-5xx6). If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove the attacker's foothold: audit every account in the UI and delete or disable all non-administrator users, since exploitation requires a pre-existing authenticated low-privilege principal - the trade-off is loss of delegated access and audit trails for those users, and it does not help if any secondary account is genuinely required. As a secondary measure, restrict reachability of the Nginx UI management port with a reverse-proxy allowlist or host firewall so only trusted administrative networks can reach /api/*; this reduces the attack surface but does not stop an insider or a user on the allowed network, and it also blocks legitimate remote administration. Additionally, after upgrading, rotate the administrator password and any JWT/session secrets and review authentication logs for unexpected password-change calls against /api/users/:id followed by anomalous token invalidation, because a completed takeover would already have persistent administrative access. Note that 2FA or OTP on the administrator account does not by itself block this path in pre-2.4.1 releases, since the vulnerable route skipped the RequireSecureSession step-up entirely.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Nginx UI (0xJacky/nginx-ui) is a Go web application, built on the Gin framework, that provides a browser-based management plane for the Nginx web server, including user administration, configuration editing, certificates, and site management. Authentication is JWT-based, with an AuthRequired middleware validating the bearer token and a RequireSecureSession middleware intended to force a step-up/re-authentication (for example an OTP-backed secure session) before high-impact operations. CVE-2026-84314 is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization): the POST /api/users/:id user-management route was mounted with only AuthRequired, so the step-up guard that the self-service password-change endpoint enforces was never applied to administrative password resets. Because the affected endpoint mutates another user's credentials, an authenticated low-privilege user can overwrite the credential of user ID 1 (the initial administrator), which causes existing administrator JWTs to become invalid and allows re-authentication as that administrator. The vendor's fix commit (23d1934099b05b2a01589b48129dc3d3159d91c2) not only corrects the user-management route but hardens a broader set of sensitive backup endpoints - GET /backup, POST /auto_backup, POST/DELETE/PATCH /auto_backup/:id and POST /auto_backup/test_s3 - behind RequireSecureSession, and adds a security_test.go suite asserting that OTP-enabled users receive HTTP 401 when hitting those routes without a secure session. This indicates the omission was a systemic routing-layer authorization gap rather than a single one-line logic bug, per the CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:0xjacky:nginx-ui:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all versions before 2.4.1.

DescriptionCVE.org

Nginx UI is a web user interface for the Nginx web server. Prior to 2.4.1, the POST /api/users/:id user-management endpoint permits an authenticated user to change another user's password without passing RequireSecureSession, even though the self-service password-change path requires that step-up. An attacker with an authenticated account can change the initial administrator's password, invalidate existing administrator tokens, and then authenticate as the administrator. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A privilege-escalation flaw in Nginx UI (all releases prior to 2.4.1) lets anyone holding an existing low-privilege login seize the built-in administrator account, silently evicting the legitimate administrator and taking full control of the Nginx configuration the UI manages. Multi-user deployments are directly exposed, meaning an attacker with only routine access could redirect, intercept, or disable production web traffic while the real administrator is locked out and unaware. Leadership should treat this as a time-bound risk: a vendor fix already exists, so the exposure closes only when every instance is upgraded and administrative credentials are rotated.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (upgrade to Nginx UI 2.4.1 or later). Until the upgrade completes, restrict UI management access to trusted networks, remove or disable unnecessary low-privilege accounts, and monitor for unauthorized administrative password changes and token invalidations.
