Network-reachable via attacker-controlled server; no client-side privileges required; user must initiate SFTP mount (UI:R); confidentiality impact is limited to partial heap memory disclosure with no integrity or availability consequence.

2DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in the SFTP backend in gvfs. When mounting a share, a malicious SFTP server can cause read_string() to allocate a buffer with a certain length but the function does not verify that the buffer is completely filled, leaving the remainder of the buffer containing uninitialized heap contents. If the server sends a short FXP_HANDLE reply, these uninitialized bytes are taken as the file handle. The client will then echo these uninitialized bytes back to the server on all subsequent requests using that handle. With a length of 128 bytes, this issue allows the malicious server to deterministically read uninitialized heap memory from the gvfsd-sftp process, leaking its heap base and the load address of the libgio library, resulting in a deterministic defeat of Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR).
AnalysisAI
Uninitialized heap memory disclosure in gvfs's SFTP backend enables a malicious SFTP server to deterministically defeat ASLR on client systems running RHEL 6 through 10. When a user mounts a crafted SFTP share, the read_string() parser allocates a buffer for the FXP_HANDLE response but does not verify that the buffer is fully populated; the client subsequently echoes the uninitialized remainder - containing heap base pointers and the libgio load address - back to the attacker on every subsequent file-handle request. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the target user to actively initiate an SFTP mount to an attacker-controlled server - for example, by clicking a crafted sftp:// link, using Nautilus 'Connect to Server', or running gio mount against the malicious host. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 score of 4.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) correctly captures the information-disclosure-only nature of the flaw and the required user interaction, but the C:L rating understates the strategic value of what is actually leaked. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patch version has been identified at time of analysis. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
