2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already possess authenticated, low-privileged local code execution on the target Windows host (CVSS PR:L, AV:L) - there is no remote or network-facing attack surface. No user interaction is required (UI:N) once local access is obtained, and no special non-default configuration is indicated; the vulnerable Win32k kernel subsystem is present by default. The principal limiting factors are the prerequisite foothold (a valid local account or prior code execution) and the local-only vector, which confine this to post-compromise privilege escalation rather than initial access. Affected builds are specific Windows 10 (1809/21H2/22H2), Windows 11 (23H2/24H2/25H2/26H1/26H2), and Windows Server (2019/2022/2025) versions below the patched build numbers listed in the EUVD data; patched builds are not affected.

Impact

This is a credible but not emergency-tier priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.8 HIGH) describes a local privilege-escalation path: the attacker must already have authenticated low-privileged code execution on the host (PR:L), but once there, exploitation is low-complexity (AC:L), needs no user interaction (UI:N), and yields total compromise (C:H/I:H/A:H), consistent with the SSVC 'Technical Impact: total' rating. However, the exploitation signals argue against treating this as an immediate crisis: SSVC reports Exploitation: none, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis, so this is a weaponization-plausible-but-not-yet-exploited bug. No EPSS probability was provided in the input, so the statistical likelihood of near-term exploitation cannot be quantified here and should be verified separately. SSVC 'Automatable: no' indicates it is not trivially mass-exploitable, aligning with its nature as a second-stage local EoP rather than a remote entry point. Net: real and patch-worthy (Win32k UAF EoPs are historically a favored post-exploitation primitive), but prioritization should sit behind any remotely exploitable or actively-exploited issues.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already gained low-privileged code execution on a Windows host - for example via phishing, a malicious document, or a compromised standard user account - runs a crafted program that triggers the use-after-free in the Win32k kernel subsystem to corrupt kernel memory and elevate to SYSTEM. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and no user interaction is required once the attacker has local access.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Local privilege escalation in the Windows Win32 Kernel Subsystem (Win32k) allows an attacker who already holds a low-privileged, authenticated local foothold to corrupt kernel memory and elevate to higher integrity, potentially SYSTEM. The flaw is a use-after-free (CWE-416) reachable through the user-mode-to-kernel windowing/GDI path; per the assessed vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, exploitation requires prior local code execution and no user interaction, so it is a post-compromise escalation primitive rather than an initial-access or remote vector. Microsoft has released vendor patches and CISA's SSVC decision data records no known exploitation and no automatable exploitation path; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. Rated 7.8 (High) with total technical impact, this is a credible but not emergency-tier priority - patch on a normal cadence, prioritizing multi-user and high-value Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server hosts.

RemediationAI

Primary fix: apply the Microsoft security update for CVE-2026-83761 via Windows Update, WSUS, or the Microsoft Update Catalog - the patched builds are the fixed versions enumerated in the EUVD/NVD data (for example 10.0.17763.9376 for Windows 10 1809 / Server 2019, 10.0.19044.7807 for Windows 10 21H2/22H2, 10.0.22631.7652 for Windows 11 23H2, 10.0.26100.9711 and 10.0.26100.33650 for Windows 11 24H2 and Server 2025, 10.0.26200.9711 for 25H2, 10.0.28000.3231 for 26H1, 10.0.26300.9711 for 26H2, and 10.0.20348.5761 for Server 2022); verify the applied build with 'winver' or 'Get-ComputerInfo' and confirm the KB is present before closing out. Because the flaw lives in a subsystem that cannot be unloaded or disabled without breaking the desktop, there is no clean per-feature workaround; the practical compensating controls are attack-surface reduction around the required local foothold: remove or disable unnecessary local accounts and tightly restrict interactive/RDP logon rights so fewer principals can reach a Win32k syscall path, enforce WDAC or AppLocker in allow-list mode to prevent untrusted binaries from executing locally (side effect: blocks legitimate unsigned tooling and requires maintenance of the policy), and enable LSA protection / Credential Guard to blunt the credential-theft payoff of a successful escalation. Running privileged users in separate, non-admin sessions and using standard-user accounts for browsing and email lowers the value of the escalation primitive but does not remove it. If rapid patching across a large estate is not feasible, prioritize internet-facing multi-user systems (RDS/Citrix/VDI, Server Core hosts) and machines with high-privilege material, noting these controls reduce exposure rather than eliminating the vulnerability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Win32k.sys (and its win32kbase/win32kfull components) is the kernel-mode driver that implements the Windows USER and GDI subsystems - window management, menus, hooks, device contexts, brushes, fonts, and the bulk of the windowing API surface. User-mode processes reach it indirectly through user32.dll and gdi32.dll, which issue kernel syscalls and callbacks into the driver, so a memory-safety bug in object lifetime management becomes a kernel bug. This is a use-after-free (CWE-416): a Win32k-managed object (for example a window, menu, hook, or GDI object) can be freed while a stale pointer or reference to it still exists, and the attacker then arranges for the freed allocation to be reoccupied with attacker-influenced content so the kernel dereferences it as a live object - classically yielding controlled memory corruption, arbitrary read/write primitives in kernel context, and ultimately token or process-credential manipulation for elevation. Because the subsystem is loaded and reachable by default on all desktop and server SKUs, no non-default configuration is required; the only real gating factor is that the attacker must first be able to execute code locally under a valid low-privileged account (CVSS PR:L/AV:L), which confines the issue to the privilege-escalation stage of a chain. CPE/build data places the affected surface across Windows 10 (1809, 21H2, 22H2), Windows 11 (23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1, 26H2), and Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, including Server Core installations - i.e., every currently serviced Windows kernel generation.

DescriptionCVE.org

Use after free in Windows Win32 Kernel Subsystem allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server hosts are affected by a high-severity local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Win32k kernel subsystem, which could allow an attacker with an existing low-privileged, authenticated local foothold to escalate to SYSTEM-level control. While no public exploit identified at time of analysis exists, this post-compromise escalation primitive increases the severity of any local compromise and warrants prioritized patching for multi-user and high-value systems.

Attack Technique

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
