DescriptionCVE.org

A security flaw has been discovered in NASA cFS up to 7.0.1. The affected element is the function CFE_SB_GetUserDataLength of the file src/cFS/cfe/modules/sb/fsw/src/cfe_sb_util.c of the component cFE Software Bus. Performing a manipulation of the argument TotalMsgSize/HdrSize results in integer underflow. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.

AnalysisAI

Integer underflow in NASA cFS's cFE Software Bus module (versions up to 7.0.1) allows a network-reachable, low-privileged attacker to manipulate TotalMsgSize and HdrSize arguments in CFE_SB_GetUserDataLength, triggering a CWE-191 wrap-around that produces an incorrect message-length value. The resulting memory misread yields low-level confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts on both the vulnerable system and downstream Software Bus consumers. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires low-level authenticated access to the cFS Software Bus - specifically, the ability to submit crafted messages with attacker-controlled TotalMsgSize and HdrSize header field values to the CFE_SB_GetUserDataLength function over a network connection. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (Medium) accurately reflects a constrained threat profile: network-reachable but requiring low-privilege authenticated access (PR:L), with impact capped at Low across all CIA dimensions for both the vulnerable system and subsequent bus consumers. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation No vendor-released patch has been identified at time of analysis - NASA did not respond to the researcher's coordinated disclosure, and no fix version appears in any available reference. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
