Exploitation Conditions

No special configuration or non-default deployment mode is required beyond the target application running an unpatched version of multer (any version before 2.3.0) with at least one HTTP endpoint where multer middleware is active. The attack does not require file upload - two plain text fields in a multipart request suffice. Unauthenticated access to the multer-protected route is the sole prerequisite per the CVSS vector (PR:N). Exploitation is limited by: network reachability to the target service, and the presence of at least one multer-handled route. Applications that apply multer exclusively behind authentication middleware have a reduced but not eliminated attack surface (authenticated attackers, including low-privilege users, can still trigger the DoS). Applications that do not accept multipart/form-data at all are not affected.

Impact

The CVSS 7.5 score and vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H are well-calibrated to this vulnerability - network-accessible, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high availability impact. This is not a case of inflated CVSS with low real-world risk: the attack is trivially executable via a single small HTTP POST, guaranteed to block the event loop upon success, and requires zero authentication. EPSS score is not provided in the available intelligence. The vulnerability is not currently listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis - however, the attack mechanism is simple enough that exploit code would require minimal effort to develop independently from the advisory description. The primary risk amplifier is multer's pervasive use across the Node.js Express ecosystem: any application with an unprotected multer route is a viable target. SSVC signals indicate the vulnerability is automatable (single crafted request), technically impactful (full process DoS), but not yet confirmed exploited in the wild - placing remediation priority in the high tier for internet-exposed services.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker sends a single small multipart/form-data HTTP POST request to any endpoint where multer middleware is active, with a first text field named using a very large numeric array index such as field[999999999] and a second text field using a non-numeric key. Upon receipt, multer's append-field dependency synchronously iterates the full sparse array allocated by the first field, blocking the Node.js event loop indefinitely and causing the server to stop responding to all subsequent requests. No public exploit code has been identified, but the mechanism is directly reproducible from the advisory description without additional reverse engineering.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 28, 2026

Event loop exhaustion in multer (all versions before 2.3.0) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to render a Node.js server completely unresponsive using a single small multipart/form-data request. Two specially crafted field names - a large numeric array index followed by a non-numeric key - cause multer's underlying append-field dependency to synchronously iterate a maximum-length sparse array, permanently blocking the event loop and preventing the process from handling any further requests. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires no authentication and a minimal payload, making it trivially automatable against any Node.js application using unpatched multer.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to multer 2.3.0, the vendor-released patch for this vulnerability, as documented in GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-535w-7cp7-47q4 at https://github.com/expressjs/multer/security/advisories/GHSA-535w-7cp7-47q4. After upgrading, configure the new opt-in limits.fieldArrayIndexLimit option and set it to the maximum numeric array index your application legitimately expects in field names - this causes multer to reject oversized indexes at ingestion before they can reach the vulnerable code path. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, a partial compensating control is to place a reverse proxy or WAF rule that rejects or sanitizes multipart field names containing very large numeric indexes before they reach the Node.js process; this approach requires careful threshold tuning and may interfere with legitimate high-index field names. A second partial mitigation is to restrict multer-protected routes to authenticated sessions only where the application permits it, reducing the unauthenticated attack surface at the cost of excluding public upload endpoints. Neither compensating control eliminates the vulnerability - upgrade to 2.3.0 with fieldArrayIndexLimit configured is the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

multer is a widely used Node.js Express middleware library for parsing multipart/form-data requests, commonly employed in file upload endpoints. The vulnerability exploits JavaScript's sparse array behavior in combination with the append-field dependency that multer uses internally to map field names to object properties. When a multipart field name contains a very large numeric array index, JavaScript allocates a sparse array of maximum length at that index. A subsequent field with a non-numeric key then triggers a synchronous full-length iteration over that sparse array inside append-field's property-setting logic. Because Node.js runs on a single-threaded event loop, this synchronous computational work starves all pending I/O callbacks and incoming requests, causing complete server unavailability. CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) accurately characterizes the root cause: attacker-controlled input is allowed to drive unbounded computational work without any upper-bound check. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:multer:multer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all releases prior to 2.3.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

multer is a middleware for handling multipart/form-data in Node.js. A small multipart request with two specially crafted text field names can make multer's field parser synchronously iterate a maximum-length sparse array, blocking the event loop so the process cannot handle other requests. A large numeric array index in the first field allocates a maximum-length sparse array, and a second field with a non-numeric key then triggers a full-length iteration inside the append-field dependency. All versions before 2.3.0 are affected, and this is a remotely triggerable denial of service. multer 2.3.0 adds an opt-in fieldArrayIndexLimit option that rejects oversized array indexes. Upgrade to multer 2.3.0 and set limits.fieldArrayIndexLimit to the largest array index your application needs to remediate.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Multer, a widely-used Node.js file upload middleware, is vulnerable to complete service disruption via unauthenticated remote requests-a single specially crafted file upload request can permanently disable any affected Node.js application. While no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, the attack is trivially automatable with minimal technical barriers, making this a critical risk for any organization relying on Node.js services for file handling.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include: WAF or reverse proxy rules blocking multipart requests with anomalous field patterns; request rate limiting on upload endpoints; process monitoring with automated restart on event loop stall detection; pre-upload request size validation; and maintaining deployment readiness for emergency security updates.
