openssl_encrypt (pip: openssl-encrypt) versions 1.4.8 and earlier fail to validate the 36-bit STREAMINFO total_samples field of FLAC files before using it to size an allocation (np.random.randint(size=(total_samples, channels))). A ~50-byte crafted FLAC file declaring ~100 million samples causes a multi-gigabyte memory allocation, leading to out-of-memory denial of service during 'decrypt --stego-extract'. The issue is fixed in 1.4.9; both the 1.4.x and 1.5.x lines are affected.

AnalysisAI
Uncontrolled memory allocation in the openssl-encrypt Python package (pip, versions ≤1.4.8) exposes any service invoking its decrypt --stego-extract command to unauthenticated denial of service via a crafted FLAC file. The STREAMINFO total_samples field - a 36-bit value fully controlled by the file author - is passed without bounds validation directly to NumPy as an array dimension, causing allocations of tens of gigabytes from a ~50-byte input. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that the target application invokes openssl-encrypt's `decrypt --stego-extract` subcommand against an attacker-supplied FLAC file - this is the specific code path that reads total_samples and calls `np.random.randint` without bounds checking. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H) characterises this as a network-reachable, zero-prerequisite denial-of-service with high availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity consequences. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker crafts a ~50-byte FLAC file with the STREAMINFO total_samples field set to approximately 100 million and submits it to an application or API endpoint that calls openssl-encrypt's `decrypt --stego-extract` on user-supplied files. The library reads the field without validation, instructs NumPy to allocate a multi-gigabyte array, and the host process is killed by the OOM killer or becomes unresponsive. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade openssl-encrypt to version 1.4.9, which introduces validation of the FLAC STREAMINFO total_samples field before it is used as a NumPy array dimension. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
