Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Three concurrent conditions are required: (1) the target must run Linux on hardware with an Atmel MCI peripheral (AT91 or AVR32 SoC) - this driver is not present on x86/x64/generic ARM systems; (2) the attacker must hold root privileges or CAP_SYS_MODULE capability to execute rmmod and unload the driver; (3) an MMC/SD card must be active and generating interrupt or DMA traffic at the moment of module removal to ensure a work item is enqueued on system_bh_wq. Exploitation is further constrained by the race condition timing window - the work item must be queued before IRQ teardown and execute after devm releases the host allocation, which is not reliably reproducible without specific timing mechanisms. Default configurations are not directly exploitable by unprivileged remote attackers.

Impact

The reported CVSS 7.8 score (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) reflects local exploitation, but two metric choices overstate exploitability: PR:L understates the required privilege level, as unloading kernel modules via rmmod requires CAP_SYS_MODULE or root in virtually all Linux configurations, making PR:H more accurate; and AC:L understates the timing constraint imposed by the race condition, which is not trivially reproducible on demand. Real-world exploitation impact remains high - a successful UAF in kernel context can achieve full kernel code execution - but the effective exploitation difficulty is meaningfully higher than the base score suggests. EPSS data is absent from available intelligence, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, meaning no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation has been reported. No public proof-of-concept code is identified. The hardware-specific driver scope (Atmel AT91/AVR32 SoCs) substantially limits the affected population; this is a routine patch-cycle priority for embedded Linux operators using this hardware, not a broad enterprise emergency. SSVC signals: exploitation status = none known; automatable = no (race condition, hardware-specific); technical impact = total.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local attacker with root or CAP_SYS_MODULE on an Atmel AT91 embedded Linux system inserts an SD card to generate sustained MMC interrupt or DMA activity, queuing work on system_bh_wq, then issues rmmod atmel_mci at the precise moment a work item is pending. The work item dereferences the freed host structure after devm cleanup, allowing the attacker to corrupt kernel heap state and redirect execution flow. No public proof-of-concept exists, but the pattern is consistent with well-documented Linux kernel UAF exploitation techniques.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 27, 2026

Use-after-free race condition in the Linux kernel atmel-mci MMC/SD controller driver allows a local privileged user to corrupt freed kernel memory by racing module removal against queued bottom-half work items. Systems running Linux on Atmel AT91 or AVR32 SoC hardware with the atmel-mci driver loaded are exclusively affected; x86/x64 deployments are unaffected by design. Patch commits are confirmed available for stable branches 6.12.x, 6.18.x, 7.1.x, and 7.2, with no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a patched kernel release: 6.12.105 or later for the 6.12.x stable branch, 6.18.46 or later for 6.18.x, 7.1.10 or later for 7.1.x, or 7.2 or later for mainline. Upstream fix commits are available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/22aecf6c4721727a2f724ca0438bc7d4b609bf3f, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b5060ff2f5460795a3e9f7cdf5052aa42f96ff81, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7599a73ff66d195a908f5d88b427933a9fb1c02a, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/c125ee35a49a0518521b52b27631eef061b8719a. As a compensating control where immediate patching is not feasible, blacklisting the atmel-mci module (add 'blacklist atmel_mci' to /etc/modprobe.d/) eliminates the attack surface entirely at the cost of disabling MMC/SD storage on the affected device. Alternatively, restrict CAP_SYS_MODULE to trusted processes only using capability bounding sets, which prevents unprivileged users from triggering module removal - note this does not eliminate risk for root-equivalent processes.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The atmel-mci driver supports MMC/SD host controllers on Atmel AT91 and AVR32 SoC platforms and allocates its host structure via devm_kzalloc(). During probe, a bottom-half work item (&host->bh_work, bound to atmci_work_func) is registered on system_bh_wq. Three asynchronous sources - the IRQ handler (atmci_interrupt), a timeout timer (atmci_timeout_timer), and a DMA completion callback (atmci_dma_complete) - can all enqueue this work. The UAF arises in atmci_remove: the IRQ, timer, and DMA channel are torn down and the function returns, triggering devm to release the host allocation, without first canceling any in-flight or pending work. If the work item was queued before IRQ teardown but executes after devm frees the host pointer, it accesses freed kernel memory. Although the input lists CWE as N/A, the root cause is CWE-416 (Use After Free) with a race-condition dimension (related to CWE-362). CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected component is the upstream Linux kernel.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mmc: atmel-mci: Fix use-after-free in atmci_remove due to race condition

In atmci_probe, &host->bh_work is bound with atmci_work_func, and atmci_interrupt, atmci_timeout_timer and atmci_dma_complete can all queue this work on system_bh_wq.

If we remove the module, atmci_remove makes cleanup and the memory allocated for host with devm_kzalloc() is released after the remove callback returns, while the work mentioned above may still be pending or running. The sequence of operations that may lead to a UAF bug is as follows:

CPU0 CPU1

| atmci_interrupt | queue_work(system_bh_wq, | &host->bh_work) atmci_remove | atmci_cleanup_slot(...) | atmci_writel(host, ATMCI_IDR, ~0UL) | timer_delete_sync(&host->timer) | dma_release_channel(host->dma.chan) | free_irq(platform_get_irq(pdev, 0), host) |

| atmci_work_func | // use host // devm resources released after | // remove returns, host is freed |

| // use host (use-after-free) Fix it by canceling the work after all the sources that can schedule it (IRQ handler, timeout timer and DMA completion callback) have been stopped, and before proceeding with the remaining cleanup in atmci_remove.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-80556 is a high-severity use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's atmel-mci driver affecting only systems deployed on Atmel AT91 or AVR32 system-on-chip hardware-primarily embedded and IoT devices. A local user with elevated kernel privileges can exploit a race condition during driver module removal to corrupt kernel memory, potentially enabling system compromise or denial of service. Standard x86/x64 deployments are unaffected by design, limiting organizational risk to those with Atmel-based IoT or industrial control infrastructure.
