DescriptionCVE.org

In NLnet Labs Unbound 1.13.2 up to and including 1.26.1, a vulnerability in ZONEMD configured zones (zonemd-check: yes) which are located below (but not at) a trust anchor allow for an attack window where (tampered with) zone contents are served (or stored to disk) prior to the ZONEMD integrity check. This is caused by the needed DS/DNSKEY asynchronous resolution that needs to happen before the ZONEMD check completes. If a zonefile is written to disk (zonefile: option) while the ZONEMD check failed, the tampered data are reloaded on startup and available until ZONEMD verification concludes again. If verification fails, the data is not served any more but still persists on disk for future reloads.

AnalysisAI

Unbound 1.13.2 through 1.26.1 can serve tampered contents of a ZONEMD-checked zone that sits below - but not at - a DNSSEC trust anchor, because the DS/DNSKEY chain resolution needed to validate the zone must complete asynchronously and the zone data is released (and, with the zonefile: option, written to disk) before the ZONEMD digest check concludes. In memory the exposure is self-correcting: once verification fails the data stops being served, but a tampered copy written to disk persists and is reloaded at the next startup until verification again concludes. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires a locally-served zone with ZONEMD verification enabled (zonemd-check: yes) that is located below - but not at - a configured trust anchor, so that asynchronous DS/DNSKEY resolution must complete before the ZONEMD check. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a low-to-moderate integrity/authenticity issue (CVSS 4.4, CWE-345), not a high-priority remotely-weaponizable flaw. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the fixed Unbound release from NLnet Labs and verify the exact patched version and upgrade instructions in the vendor advisory at https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/unbound/CVE-2026-77955.txt; no specific fix version is listed in the available intelligence, so the advisory is the authoritative source for patch status. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
