DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, and Splunk Secure Gateway versions below 3.10.9, 3.9.23, and 3.8.70, an unauthenticated user could trick a user who holds the "admin" or "sc_admin" Splunk roles into opening a crafted Splunk Web Uniform Resource Locator (URL). The resulting dashboard searches could run arbitrary Search Processing Language (SPL) commands with the permissions available to the affected user. The commands could expose all relevant data available to that user and affect search results or lookup data. The vulnerability is possible because Splunk Secure Gateway dashboards do not correctly neutralize caller-supplied values before using them in dashboard searches. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the affected user by tricking them into initiating a request within their browser. The unauthenticated user should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will.

AnalysisAI

SPL injection via Splunk Secure Gateway's unsanitized dashboard URL parameters allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary Search Processing Language commands under the full permissions of a phished Splunk administrator. The Splunk Secure Gateway component fails to neutralize caller-supplied values before embedding them in dashboard searches, meaning a crafted URL opened by an 'admin' or 'sc_admin' user causes injected SPL to run with that user's data access - potentially exposing all indexed data visible to the administrator and corrupting search results or lookup tables. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The victim must hold the 'admin' or 'sc_admin' Splunk role - standard user accounts are not sufficient to produce meaningful privilege or data-access impact through this path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.4 with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:L accurately captures the split character of this vulnerability: the potential impact is substantial (C:H - admin-level SPL can access all indexed data), but attack complexity is high (AC:H) because execution depends on successfully social-engineering an admin-level Splunk user. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker targeting a Splunk-instrumented security operations center identifies a Splunk administrator via LinkedIn or leaked directory data, then crafts a malicious Splunk Web URL embedding injected SPL commands into Secure Gateway dashboard parameters - for example, a search that exfiltrates indexed password hashes or alert telemetry to an attacker-controlled lookup. The administrator receives the URL in a phishing email made to resemble an internal dashboard alert or a colleague's shared search link, clicks it while authenticated to Splunk, and the Secure Gateway component incorporates the unsanitized parameters into a live dashboard search that executes silently with admin permissions. …
Remediation Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to version 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 or later within the corresponding release train. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
