Attacker is unauthenticated and delivers attack over network, but victim must actively open the crafted link; all three impact dimensions are high because arbitrary SPL executes under the victim's full session authority.

DescriptionNVD

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, 9.4.14, and 9.3.14, an unauthenticated user could cause another user to dispatch arbitrary Search Processing Language (SPL) pipelines from Dataset Explorer with the same privileges as that user, which can allow for access to all relevant data and system integrity available to that user and affect system availability. The vulnerability is possible because Dataset Explorer does not validate or escape dataset names before building SPL searches and does not apply SPL safeguards for risky commands to those searches. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the user by tricking them into opening the crafted link. The unauthenticated user should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will. For more information see Explore a dataset (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/manage-knowledge-objects/knowledge-management-manual/10.4/manage-and-explore-datasets/explore-a-dataset) and SPL safeguards for risky commands (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.4/best-practices-for-splunk-platform-security/spl-safeguards-for-risky-commands) in the Splunk documentation.

AnalysisAI

SPL injection via Dataset Explorer in Splunk Enterprise allows an unauthenticated attacker to cause an authenticated victim to execute arbitrary Search Processing Language pipelines under that victim's own privileges. Affected versions span five concurrent release branches - 10.4 below 10.4.2, 10.2 below 10.2.6, 10.0 below 10.0.9, 9.4 below 9.4.14, and 9.3 below 9.3.14 - giving this vulnerability broad reach across common enterprise deployments. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The essential prerequisite is that an authenticated Splunk Enterprise user with access to the Dataset Explorer feature must open a crafted link delivered by the attacker - the attack cannot proceed without this victim interaction. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 8.8 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately reflects the threat profile: the attack is network-delivered, requires no Splunk credentials from the attacker, and carries full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact against the victim user's data and session context. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An unauthenticated attacker constructs a Splunk Enterprise Dataset Explorer URL embedding SPL commands within a crafted dataset name - for example, injecting a search pipeline that exfiltrates index contents to an external destination - and delivers this URL to a logged-in Splunk user via a phishing email or instant message. When the victim clicks the link, their authenticated browser session triggers Dataset Explorer to build and execute the injected SPL pipeline under their full session privileges, potentially exposing sensitive security log data or disrupting search availability. …
Remediation Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to the patched release corresponding to the branch in use: 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, 9.4.14, or 9.3.14, per the vendor advisory at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Splunk Enterprise instances and identify those running vulnerable versions (9.3 before 9.3.14, 9.4 before 9.4.14, 10.0 before 10.0.9, 10.2 before 10.2.6, or 10.4 before 10.4.2), then notify teams managing these systems. …
