| Exploitation Conditions | The target deployment must have WebAuthn/passkey authentication enabled and actively used by at least one account (versions <= 4.1.5). The attacker must first capture a complete, successful WebAuthn assertion for the victim - this is the concrete, limiting prerequisite reflected in AC:H and AT:P, and normally requires a privileged network vantage point (MITM, malicious proxy, or access to traffic/logs) since the assertion transits TLS. Once a valid assertion is captured, no further conditions apply: no hardware key, no user interaction, and no authentication of the attacker are needed to replay it indefinitely. Deployments that do not use WebAuthn logins are not exploitable via this flaw. |
| Impact | The impact ceiling is high - full account takeover with high confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H) and no privileges or user interaction required (PR:N/UI:N) - but the practical barrier is real: the CVSS 4.0 vector carries AC:H and AT:P, reflecting that the attacker must first obtain a genuine successful WebAuthn assertion for the target, which normally travels over TLS. That capture prerequisite, not a trivial network request, is what gates this bug; once an assertion is obtained (via interception, a compromised proxy/reverse proxy, logged traffic, or a malicious network position), replay is unlimited and trivial. There is no KEV listing and no POC has surfaced, and EPSS data was not provided, so this reads as a serious-but-not-yet-mass-exploited issue. Given that patching is a simple upgrade, any operator using WebAuthn logins - even a mid-sized municipal IT team in rybnik should treat this as urgent - should upgrade promptly rather than wait for exploitation signals. Note the input 'Denial Of Service' tag appears mislabeled; this is an authentication bypass, not a DoS. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker positioned to observe or record a victim's traffic (for example via a malicious or misconfigured reverse proxy, captured logs, or a network foothold) collects one successful WebAuthn login assertion for an administrator. Because phpMyFAQ never persists and consumes the challenge, the attacker resubmits that same assertion to the login endpoint and is authenticated as the victim, repeatedly, without the hardware key or any user interaction. No public POC is currently identified, but the mechanism is fully described in the vendor advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026
Authentication bypass via WebAuthn assertion replay in phpMyFAQ affects all versions up to and including 4.1.5, fixed in 4.1.7. Because prepareForLogin generates a login challenge but neither WebAuthn controller writes the mutated key object back to the database, the anti-replay check is short-circuited by its own null guard, so an attacker who captures one successful WebAuthn assertion can resubmit it indefinitely to log in as that user with no hardware key or user interaction. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV, but the root cause is well documented in the vendor advisory.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to phpMyFAQ 4.1.7 or later, which persists the WebAuthn challenge so the single-use anti-replay comparison actually executes; this is the primary and complete fix, per advisory GHSA-f534-wv9g-wx2w (https://github.com/thorsten/phpMyFAQ/security/advisories/GHSA-f534-wv9g-wx2w). If you cannot upgrade immediately, reduce exposure by temporarily disabling WebAuthn/passkey login and falling back to password plus a separately-validated second factor, accepting the usability loss of removing hardware-key auth; ensure the application is only reachable over strict TLS (HSTS, no downgrade) and audit any reverse proxies or TLS-terminating middleware that could log or expose assertion payloads, since captured assertions are the exploitation prerequisite. Invalidate existing sessions after patching in case replayed logins already occurred.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in phpMyFAQ's WebAuthn (FIDO2/passkey) login flow. WebAuthn normally prevents replay by binding each authentication to a fresh server-generated random challenge that must be validated exactly once and then invalidated. Here, prepareForLogin creates and mutates the credential/challenge object in memory, but the controllers never persist that mutation, so on the next request the stored challenge is null. The verification code guards its anti-replay comparison behind a null check, so a null stored challenge causes the comparison to be skipped entirely rather than failing closed. This is a textbook CWE-294 (Authentication Bypass by Capture-replay) caused by a broken single-use-nonce invariant. The affected component is the open-source PHP FAQ application identified by cpe:2.3:a:thorsten:phpmyfaq (all versions through 4.1.5).

2DescriptionCVE.org
phpMyFAQ before 4.1.7 (affected versions <= 4.1.5) fails to persist the WebAuthn login challenge generated by prepareForLogin, because neither WebAuthn controller saves the mutated key objects back to the database. At login the anti-replay comparison is skipped by its own null guard, allowing an attacker who captures a successful WebAuthn assertion to replay it indefinitely and authenticate as the user without any interaction or hardware key.
Executive ViewAI
phpMyFAQ versions up to 4.1.5 contain a critical authentication bypass vulnerability that allows attackers who capture a single WebAuthn login assertion to replay it indefinitely and gain unauthorized access to any affected user account without hardware key or additional verification. If phpMyFAQ is deployed in your organization, this vulnerability could expose all user accounts to unauthorized access and potential data compromise.
