Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the victim invoke aspell against an attacker-supplied binary .rws dictionary file, supplied specifically through the --master option, the --dict-dir option, or an equivalent configuration setting that points dictionary loading at the crafted file. The trigger is ReadOnlyDict::load() in readonly_ws.cpp treating header offset fields as byte indices into a heap buffer without bounds validation. Limiting factors: the vector is local (AV:L) with no network exposure, attack complexity is high (AC:H) because the malicious offsets must be shaped against the heap layout, and active user interaction is mandatory (UI:A) - the user must deliberately run aspell with the malicious dictionary path. No elevated privileges are needed (PR:N), but the social-engineering/file-delivery requirement substantially constrains real-world exploitability. Impact is confined to limited heap memory disclosure and process crash; no code execution or integrity impact.

Impact

This is a low-priority vulnerability by every available signal, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:L/SI:N/SA:N, score 1.8) describes a local-vector, high-complexity flaw that requires active user interaction and yields only limited impact (application crash / limited memory disclosure). There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so there is no evidence of exploitation pressure to contradict the low base score. The core limiting factor is the delivery model: the attacker does not reach the victim over a network but must first get a user to run aspell against an attacker-controlled binary .rws dictionary file. The realistic worst case is heap memory disclosure (potential leak of adjacent heap contents) or a denial of service via crash of the aspell process - not code execution, as CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) and the vector's VI:N/VA:L (no integrity impact) confirm. One minor data caveat: the two provided references point to cert.pl (with a URL path referencing the neighboring ID CVE-2026-75818) and the generic aspell.net homepage, neither of which is a direct advisory for this exact ID - the authoritative source is the vendor fix commit. Overall this is a genuinely low-risk, high-CVSS-it-is-not issue; prioritize via routine patching, not emergency response.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious binary .rws dictionary whose header offset fields point outside the allocated heap buffer, then convinces a victim (via phishing, a malicious repo, or a shared dictionary) to run aspell with that file through --master, --dict-dir, or a configuration option. When ReadOnlyDict::load() uses the unvalidated offsets as indices, the process reads out of bounds, disclosing adjacent heap memory or crashing. No public exploit code has been identified, and success depends on the user actively invoking aspell against the crafted file.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Heap out-of-bounds read in GNU Aspell's binary dictionary loader (ReadOnlyDict::load() in readonly_ws.cpp) lets a crafted .rws dictionary file trigger limited heap memory disclosure or a crash of the aspell process. The victim must deliberately run aspell against the attacker-supplied dictionary via --master, --dict-dir, or an equivalent configuration setting, so the vector is local, high-complexity and dependent on user interaction, and no privileges are required (PR:N). Impact is confined to limited information disclosure and denial of service with no code execution or integrity impact, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (commit 941953b25031bc9104e83f58e138a664b8dedc3f); released patched version not independently confirmed, with the project stating the fix will ship in Aspell 0.60.8.3 - upgrade to that release or build from the fix commit as soon as it is available. Until then, treat .rws dictionary files as untrusted input: never run aspell with a dictionary received from an email, download, or archive supplied by a third party, and do not pass user-controlled paths to --master, --dict-dir, or their configuration equivalents. Practical compensating controls: execute aspell under an unprivileged account and inside a sandbox (bubblewrap, firejail) so a crash or disclosure is confined to that process; apply RLIMIT_AS and RLIMIT_CORE limits to contain the crash; and avoid invoking aspell from privileged daemons or scripts that hold sensitive data in their heap, since the bug can disclose process heap contents. Technical ContextAI · show details

GNU Aspell is a widely embedded spell-checking library and CLI used by word processors, editors, and mail clients. Its binary .rws 'read-only dictionary' format is a compiled word list whose header carries offset fields that ReadOnlyDict::load() in readonly_ws.cpp uses directly as byte indices into a heap buffer holding the loaded file - a textbook CWE-125 out-of-bounds read, because those offsets are never validated against the buffer length before being dereferenced. The vulnerable path is reached whenever Aspell loads a dictionary named on the command line (--master, --dict-dir) or through an aspell.conf-style configuration directive, so any environment where a user can be induced to point Aspell at an attacker-controlled .rws file is exposed. The wildcard CPE cpe:2.3:a:gnu:aspell:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the flaw is present across pre-fix Aspell builds. The CVSS 4.0 vector AV:L/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:L/SI:N/SA:N and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L agree that exploitation is local, requires offsets shaped against the heap layout, needs explicit user action, and yields at most low confidentiality and availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

GNU Aspell contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in ReadOnlyDict::load() in readonly_ws.cpp. When loading a binary .rws dictionary file, it uses offset fields from the file header as byte indices into a heap buffer without validating their bounds. An attacker can trigger this by convincing a user to run aspell with a crafted dictionary file supplied through --master, --dict-dir, or configuration options, leading to heap memory disclosure or a denial of service via application crash.

This issue was fixed in commit 941953b25031bc9104e83f58e138a664b8dedc3f which will be released in version 0.60.8.3.
