Local vector and high complexity reflect the 32-bit `long` platform constraint and RTP packetizer code path requirement; user interaction required to trigger processing of crafted AV1 content.

2DescriptionCVE.org
FFmpeg before commit b4c199c contains an incorrect integer narrowing conversion in the AV1 RTP packetizer (libavformat/rtpenc_av1.c). The OBU size is cast to long before comparison against the remaining frame size. On targets where long is 32 bits, including 64-bit Windows, sufficiently large OBU size values are sign-flipped by the narrowing cast, producing a negative value that passes the payload size check. This allows an oversized OBU to bypass the safety bound on affected platforms, leading to out-of-bounds memory access when the oversized value is subsequently used as a copy length.
AnalysisAI
Out-of-bounds memory access in FFmpeg's AV1 RTP packetizer (libavformat/rtpenc_av1.c) is triggered by an integer narrowing conversion that sign-flips large OBU size values on platforms where C long is 32 bits, most critically 64-bit Windows builds. The sign-flipped negative value passes a payload size bounds check, causing a subsequent oversized copy operation and out-of-bounds memory access that can crash the application or - with additional exploit primitives - be leveraged for memory corruption. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the target to be running a 64-bit Windows build of FFmpeg, where the C `long` type is 32 bits (LLP64 data model) - this is the sole platform class where the sign-flip occurs; Linux and macOS are not affected. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.8 accurately captures the moderate but real risk profile. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker delivers a crafted AV1 bitstream containing an OBU with an anomalously large size value to a Windows-based application using FFmpeg for AV1-over-RTP streaming - for example, a media server or transcoding pipeline that accepts external AV1 input. On the 64-bit Windows host where `long` is 32 bits, the packetizer narrows the OBU size to a negative value that clears the bounds check, causing the subsequent memory copy to write beyond the allocated buffer, crashing the service or potentially enabling further exploitation with a crafted heap layout. … |
| Remediation | The upstream fix is available via commit b4c199c5906ff53368926c2a5839881f41957e7f at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/b4c199c5906ff53368926c2a5839881f41957e7f, also tracked in PR https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/24090. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
