Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires local code execution with at least low privilege (confirmed by CVSS PR:L) on a Linux host where the iommufd framework is active - specifically, a system with IOMMU enabled in firmware (Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi) and at least one device configured for passthrough via VFIO, vDPA, or a similar dmabuf-sharing mechanism. Standard Linux servers, desktops, or containers without device passthrough configured do not exercise the iommufd-dmabuf code path and are not exposed. The race condition additionally depends on concurrent scheduling of dmabuf invalidation callbacks during the detach window, meaning exploitation is timing-dependent and not deterministically reproducible without kernel internals knowledge. What limits exploitation: the local attack vector eliminates remote unauthenticated exploitation, the race window introduces practical reliability constraints, and the non-default requirement for IOMMU device passthrough significantly narrows the exposed population relative to the full Linux kernel install base. |
| Impact | The CVSS 8.8 with Changed Scope signals that successful exploitation may breach IOMMU isolation boundaries and affect co-resident workloads or VMs - a serious concern for cloud and virtualization providers. However, this severity must be balanced against the AV:L (local) attack vector, which restricts exploitation to actors already with code execution on the host, and the race-condition nature of the flaw, which makes reliable triggering non-trivial and is reflected in the AC:L assignment that arguably understates practical complexity. The EPSS of 0.15% at the 5th percentile strongly corroborates low real-world exploitation activity and conflicts with the elevated CVSS; the gap is best explained by the local-only, timing-dependent nature of the flaw. The absence of a CISA KEV entry confirms no confirmed active exploitation. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in tczew operating Linux-based KVM virtualization infrastructure should treat patching as moderate-urgency for general hosts but high-urgency for shared-tenant or GPU-passthrough environments where cross-VM data exposure is a concrete risk. Patch availability from upstream kernel.org substantially reduces residual risk for teams on current stable kernel branches. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged local attacker on a KVM virtualization host with GPU or NIC passthrough configured initiates a carefully timed sequence of concurrent dmabuf operations - triggering an invalidation callback to fire precisely while the iommufd subsystem is mid-teardown, after the pages mutex has been freed but before the dmabuf detach completes. The resulting use-after-free corrupts kernel memory in a manner that may enable privilege escalation within the host kernel or leak memory contents from co-resident VMs sharing IOMMU domains. No public POC is known at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel iommufd subsystem allows a local low-privileged attacker on IOMMU-enabled systems to corrupt kernel memory by triggering dmabuf invalidation callbacks against already-destroyed page structures during detach. Affected configurations include virtualization hosts using VFIO or vDPA device passthrough where the iommufd framework is active. The CVSS S:C (Changed Scope) rating reflects the potential for cross-workload impact in multi-tenant environments; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and EPSS at 0.15% (5th percentile) indicates negligible observed exploitation activity.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to apply the upstream kernel stable patches available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0507fcedbdcc87281ef8639c045fc9980363bbb6 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/f2d70dbd3dcefa8e3c380beff9c31f5f033a4221, which reorder the iommufd teardown to ensure dmabuf is fully detached before pages content is destroyed. Systems running distribution kernels should update to patched packages at Linux 7.1.5 or later (7.2-rc1 for pre-release tracks) via the standard distribution package manager once downstream vendors publish backported fixes. For systems where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict access to IOMMU device nodes (/dev/vfio/*, /dev/iommu) to only trusted, privileged service accounts using filesystem permissions, AppArmor profiles, or SELinux policy - this narrows the attacker's required privilege but does not eliminate the vulnerability. Disabling device passthrough entirely (VFIO/vDPA) removes the vulnerable code path completely but disrupts GPU passthrough and SR-IOV workloads and should only be applied where those capabilities are not operationally required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The iommufd framework (IOMMU File Descriptor) provides userspace control over DMA remapping in the Linux kernel, enabling device passthrough for virtualization workloads such as VFIO and vDPA. The dmabuf (DMA buffer sharing) subsystem provides a cross-driver memory-sharing mechanism with lifecycle callbacks, including invalidation callbacks that fire during buffer teardown. The vulnerability is a sequencing defect: iommufd destroys the internal pages content - including the associated mutex - before the dmabuf detach operation completes. Because dmabuf invalidation callbacks can still reference that mutex during the detach window, a concurrent callback results in use of freed kernel memory, consistent with CWE-362 (Race Condition) and CWE-416 (Use After Free), though no formal CWE is assigned by NVD. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms this is a mainline Linux kernel codebase defect, with the EUVD-2026-59475 record identifying specific commit ranges introducing the vulnerable ordering.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
iommufd: Destroy the pages content after detaching from dmabuf
Sashiko points out this has gotten out of order, the mutex could still be in use through the dmabuf invalidation callbacks. Don't destroy any of the pages content until the dmabuf is fully detached.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity kernel isolation vulnerability (CVE-2026-74328) affects Linux virtualization systems, potentially allowing compromised workloads to corrupt kernel memory affecting other isolated systems. Active exploitation remains minimal (0.15% observed), but the risk to cloud platforms, multi-tenant environments, and virtualized infrastructure is significant. Available patches should be deployed through standard maintenance cycles to eliminate cross-workload isolation risk.
