Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires ALL of the following: the server must run Apache HTTP Server 2.4.x with mod_auth_digest enabled for authentication; the directive AuthDigestNonceLifetime must be explicitly set to 0 (a non-default configuration); and the attacker must hold a man-in-the-middle position to capture the victim's digest authentication credentials. The attack further depends on sending crafted requests that force garbage collection of the client's shared-memory nonce entry so the captured credentials can be replayed. Limiting factors: the MITM prerequisite means the attacker cannot exploit this purely remotely without network interception (e.g., unencrypted HTTP or a compromised path), and the AuthDigestNonceLifetime=0 setting is not a default, substantially narrowing the exposed population.

Impact

No CVSS vector was provided by the source (CVSS: N/A), so severity signals must be inferred from the description and CWE-294 (Authentication Bypass by Capture-replay). This is NOT confirmed actively exploited: it is absent from CISA KEV and no POC is referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' EPSS is not supplied and cannot be assumed. The real-world risk is tightly bounded by several stacked prerequisites rather than being a broad network-exploitable flaw: the attacker must (1) occupy a man-in-the-middle position on the traffic path, (2) target a server using mod_auth_digest for authentication, and (3) rely on the non-default configuration AuthDigestNonceLifetime=0. While Apache HTTP Server itself is ubiquitous, the specific vulnerable configuration (digest auth with nonce lifetime of 0) is uncommon in modern deployments, which favor TLS-terminated form/token auth over HTTP digest. Net assessment: this is a legitimate authentication-bypass weakness in a ubiquitous product, but the MITM requirement plus non-default configuration make it a lower-priority, conditional issue rather than a mass-exploitation threat - patch as part of normal maintenance unless digest auth with the vulnerable setting is in use, in which case prioritize. No CVSS score is available to independently corroborate this, so severity should be validated against the vendor advisory.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker positioned as a man-in-the-middle on the network path between a client and an Apache 2.4.x server (configured with mod_auth_digest and AuthDigestNonceLifetime=0) captures a client's digest authentication credentials. The attacker then sends crafted requests that trigger garbage collection of the client's shared-memory nonce entry, allowing the previously captured credentials to be replayed successfully and bypass authentication. No public exploit code is referenced for this CVE.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026

Authentication bypass in the mod_auth_digest module of Apache HTTP Server 2.4.x allows a man-in-the-middle attacker to capture a victim's HTTP Digest authentication credentials and replay them to impersonate that user against the server. Exploitation is conditional: the server must have mod_auth_digest enabled and the non-default directive AuthDigestNonceLifetime must be explicitly set to 0, and the attacker must additionally occupy a network interception position to capture the digest exchange and send crafted requests that force garbage collection of the client's shared-memory nonce entry. The assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N) reflects high confidentiality impact but a high attack-complexity and MITM prerequisite; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the source supplied no CVSS score or EPSS estimate.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 2.4.69 - upgrade Apache HTTP Server to version 2.4.69 or later, as stated in the vendor advisory (https://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_24.html), and restart the service so the updated mod_auth_digest is loaded. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to change the affected directive away from the vulnerable value: set AuthDigestNonceLifetime to a non-zero value (or remove the explicit setting so the module default applies), which removes the nonce-never-expires condition the capture-replay path depends on - the trade-off is that clients may be re-challenged more frequently. Where digest authentication is not strictly required, disable mod_auth_digest entirely (or unload it) and migrate the affected protected resources to a mechanism not susceptible to credential replay, such as TLS client certificates or a session-token-based scheme, noting that this is a configuration and client-compatibility change. Because exploitation requires a man-in-the-middle position, enforce HTTPS on all authenticated endpoints, redirect or block plaintext HTTP access to them, and enable HSTS so captured digest exchanges cannot be obtained from the network in the first place; this reduces the capture half of the attack but does not by itself fix the replay flaw, so it should be treated as a secondary measure alongside patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue resides in mod_auth_digest, the Apache HTTP Server module implementing RFC 2617/7616 HTTP Digest authentication. Digest authentication is a challenge-response scheme in which the server issues a nonce, stores per-client state in a shared-memory table, and validates a client-computed hash rather than transmitting a cleartext password. The AuthDigestNonceLifetime directive governs how long a nonce stays valid; when it is set to 0 the module is configured so that nonces do not expire, and this CVE describes a capture-replay condition (CWE-294) in which an attacker who has already observed a valid digest exchange via a man-in-the-middle position can re-submit the captured credentials in crafted requests that also trigger garbage collection of the legitimate client's shared-memory entry, effectively taking over that slot and being accepted as the authenticated user. The root cause class is authentication bypass through replay of captured authentication material, i.e., insufficient binding of the nonce/replay state to the current session. The affected product set as reported is the entire Apache Software Foundation Apache HTTP Server 2.4.x line (CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_http_server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), across all platforms; configurations that do not enable mod_auth_digest, or that leave AuthDigestNonceLifetime at its non-zero default, are outside the exploitable configuration.

DescriptionCVE.org

Authentication bypass by capture-replay in mod_auth_digest in Apache Software Foundation Apache HTTP Server 2.4.x on all platforms allows a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacker to replay captured digest authentication credentials via crafted requests that trigger garbage collection of the client's shared memory entry when AuthDigestNonceLifetime is set to 0.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.4.69, which fixes this issue.
