Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to be running FreeRDP in server mode - not client mode, which represents the majority of FreeRDP deployments - with the RDSTLS authentication path active. RDSTLS is used specifically for connection redirection and session resumption, so it must be exercised in the server's configuration for the vulnerable code in rdstls_server_authenticate to be reachable. The attacker must have network access to the RDP listener port (typically TCP 3389) and must be able to establish a TLS-protected connection and initiate the RDSTLS handshake sequence. No credentials, existing session, or user interaction are required. Exploitation is bounded by the AT:P precondition: the attacker must reach the specific handshake state where rdstls_server_authenticate is waiting for RDSTLS_TYPE_AUTHREQ before sending the substituted RDSTLS_TYPE_CAPABILITIES PDU. Standard FreeRDP client-only deployments are entirely unaffected.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) accurately characterizes a high-severity, network-exploitable authentication bypass. The AT:P (attack preconditions present) modifier is the key moderating factor: exploitation requires the target to be running FreeRDP in server mode with RDSTLS active, which constrains exposure since the large majority of FreeRDP deployments operate as clients. No EPSS score was provided, preventing probabilistic comparison to the CVSS signal. No CISA KEV listing exists, and no public exploit code has been identified, meaning there is no confirmed evidence of in-the-wild exploitation at time of analysis. Despite this, real-world risk for affected server deployments is genuine: the bypass is mechanically simple - it requires only sending a wrong PDU type at the right handshake moment - and the confidentiality impact is high since it grants unauthorized session access without credentials. Organizations deploying FreeRDP-based RDP servers in internet-exposed or multi-tenant environments should treat this as a priority given the trivial exploitation path, even absent confirmed exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated remote attacker connects to a FreeRDP RDP server on the standard RDP port and initiates the RDSTLS handshake. At the point where the server's rdstls_server_authenticate is waiting for an RDSTLS_TYPE_AUTHREQ PDU containing credentials, the attacker instead sends an RDSTLS_TYPE_CAPABILITIES PDU; lacking state-machine validation, the server processes it without error and returns with resultCode still at RDSTLS_RESULT_SUCCESS, granting the attacker an authenticated session context without any credential verification. No public exploit code has been identified, but the attack requires only knowledge of RDSTLS PDU type values and correct sequencing within the TLS-protected channel.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026

Server-side RDSTLS authentication bypass in FreeRDP prior to 3.30.0 allows a remote unauthenticated client to skip credential verification entirely - RedirectionGuid, username, domain, and password checks are all circumvented. The flaw exists in libfreerdp/core/rdstls.c: the server's rdstls_server_authenticate function accepted a RDSTLS_TYPE_CAPABILITIES PDU when it was expecting RDSTLS_TYPE_AUTHREQ, and because resultCode was initialized to RDSTLS_RESULT_SUCCESS rather than ACCESS_DENIED, the function returned success without any actual authentication occurring. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and this CVE is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog, but the bypass is mechanically straightforward for any attacker with RDSTLS protocol knowledge.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is upgrading to FreeRDP 3.30.0 or later, confirmed via the official release at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/releases/tag/3.30.0 and GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-rqgv-grx4-xm6x. The underlying fix is also available as commit b05a9510787c83c87ffc5fa8d7cc9f06ed971695 and pull request #13065 at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/pull/13065; note that these are upstream source changes and a formal packaged release is the preferred deployment target. As a compensating control where immediate upgrade is not feasible, administrators should restrict network access to the RDP listener port (typically TCP 3389) to trusted IP ranges only - this limits the attacker population to those already with network adjacency, reducing but not eliminating exposure. If RDSTLS is not required for session reconnection in the deployment, disabling the RDSTLS code path at the server configuration level eliminates the vulnerable surface entirely, though this may break connection redirection for existing clients. No other workarounds are documented in the source advisory.

Technical ContextAI · show details

RDSTLS (Remote Desktop Security TLS) is a protocol layer within Microsoft's RDP stack used for connection redirection and session resumption authentication. FreeRDP implements server-side RDSTLS in libfreerdp/core/rdstls.c via a state machine that sequences through capability negotiation, authentication request, and authentication response phases. The root cause (CWE-287: Improper Authentication) is two compounding flaws: first, the rdpRdstls structure initialized resultCode to zero, which maps to RDSTLS_RESULT_SUCCESS rather than an explicit denial state; second, rdstls_server_authenticate lacked any state-machine gate to reject PDUs of the wrong type arriving out of sequence. The commit diff confirms the fix: resultCode is now explicitly set to RDSTLS_RESULT_ACCESS_DENIED at allocation in rdstls_new, and new helper functions rdstls_check_state_requirements and rdstls_required_role_is_server enforce that each PDU handler verifies the current state and role before processing. No CPE strings were included in the source intelligence, so affected scope is described by version rather than formal CPE identifiers.

DescriptionCVE.org

FreeRDP is a free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. Prior to 3.30.0, FreeRDP server-side RDSTLS in libfreerdp/core/rdstls.c accepts an attacker-supplied RDSTLS_TYPE_CAPABILITIES PDU while rdstls_server_authenticate is waiting for RDSTLS_TYPE_AUTHREQ, leaving resultCode at RDSTLS_RESULT_SUCCESS and allowing a remote unauthenticated client to bypass the RedirectionGuid, username, domain, or password checks. This issue is fixed in version 3.30.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FreeRDP versions prior to 3.30.0 contain a critical RDSTLS authentication bypass that allows remote attackers to connect without providing valid credentials, completely defeating access controls on affected RDP servers. Organizations using vulnerable FreeRDP deployments face immediate risk of unauthorized access to systems protected only by RDP authentication.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch: upgrade all FreeRDP instances to version 3.30.0 or later.
