Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation targets the editer_objet action of a network-reachable SPIP instance running a version before 4.4.18, and requires the attacker to possess a valid nonce for that action; the request supplies arg=job/0 with attacker-chosen fonction and args fields to write into the spip_jobs table. Code execution does not occur on the request itself but is triggered later when SPIP's cron/job queue is processed, so a functioning job scheduler must be active. The valid-nonce requirement is the main limiting factor and is not reflected in the PR:N CVSS metric; if nonces are only reachable by an authenticated editor, the practical privilege bar is higher than 'unauthenticated' - verify against the vendor advisory.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a paper-tiger high score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, 9.3) describes a network-reachable path with full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact, and publicly available exploit code plus a detailed SQLi-to-RCE write-up materially raise real-world risk. The one tempering factor is the description's requirement for a 'valid nonce', which the PR:N/AC:L metrics do not capture; SPIP nonces are per-action tokens, so the true difficulty depends on how easily an unauthenticated attacker can obtain a usable nonce - worth verifying against the vendor advisory. There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS figure supplied, so this is not confirmed as mass-exploited, but given working public exploit code any exposed SPIP instance should be patched immediately rather than waiting for widespread scanning. Even a mid-sized operator running a single public SPIP site should treat this as urgent.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker obtains a valid nonce for the editer_objet action and sends a crafted request with arg=job/0 plus fonction and args values pointing at a dangerous PHP function; the request writes a malicious row into spip_jobs. When SPIP's cron drains the queue, the serialized payload is unserialized and the function executes, giving arbitrary PHP execution on the host. A public proof-of-concept demonstrating this SQLi-to-RCE chain is available in the Lexfo blog post.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 11, 2026

Remote code execution in the SPIP CMS (all versions before 4.4.18) lets attackers holding a valid nonce inject rows into the internal spip_jobs cron table via the editer_objet action, ultimately executing arbitrary PHP. Because the arg parameter resolves SQL table names without an editable-columns allowlist, a crafted arg=job/0 request smuggles attacker-controlled fonction and args values that are unserialized and invoked when the job queue drains. Publicly available exploit code exists (Lexfo write-up chaining SQL injection to RCE), and the flaw was reported by VulnCheck.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to SPIP 4.4.18 or later (Vendor-released patch: 4.4.18), per the SPIP security bulletin at https://blog.spip.net/Mise-a-jour-critique-de-securite-sortie-de-SPIP-4-4-18.html. Until patching is possible, restrict network access to the SPIP administration/editing interface (the editer_objet action) to trusted IPs or via a reverse-proxy/WAF rule that blocks requests where the arg parameter targets job/0 or the spip_jobs object, accepting that overly broad filtering could break legitimate editing; additionally, temporarily disabling or gating SPIP's cron/job-queue processing prevents queued malicious jobs from being unserialized and executed, at the cost of pausing scheduled/background tasks. Review the spip_jobs table for unexpected fonction/args entries before and after upgrading. Confirm remediation against the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/spip-remote-code-execution-via-editer-objet-php-job-queue-injection).

Technical ContextAI · show details

SPIP is a PHP-based content management/publishing system (cpe:2.3:a:spip:spip). The root cause is CWE-915 (improperly controlled modification of dynamically-determined object attributes, i.e. mass assignment): the editer_objet handler maps the user-supplied arg parameter to a SQL table/object without restricting which columns may be written. This permits writing directly to the spip_jobs table, SPIP's asynchronous cron/task queue. Queue entries store a PHP function name (fonction) and its arguments (args) in serialized form; when SPIP's scheduler later drains the queue it unserializes and calls them, so a forged job becomes an arbitrary PHP function call on the server - the SQL-injection-style write is thereby escalated into code execution.

DescriptionCVE.org

SPIP before 4.4.18 contains a remote code execution vulnerability in the editer_objet action where the arg parameter resolves SQL table names without enforcing an editable columns allowlist, allowing attackers with a valid nonce to inject attacker-controlled rows into the spip_jobs table. Attackers can supply arg=job/0 with crafted fonction and args values, which are later unserialized and executed when the cron job queue is drained, resulting in arbitrary PHP function execution on the underlying system.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SPIP Content Management System versions prior to 4.4.18 contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability in the job queue processing mechanism. Publicly available exploit code exists, and attackers can inject malicious cron jobs that execute arbitrary PHP code when the queue is processed, enabling complete system compromise. Organizations running affected versions face immediate risk of data theft, service disruption, and unauthorized administrative access.
