DescriptionCVE.org

rsync 3.2.5 before 3.5.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability that allows remote unauthenticated attackers to write one attacker-controlled byte past the end of a heap allocation by supplying a crafted files-from entry. Attackers can trigger the vulnerability against a read-only rsync daemon module by providing a files-from entry containing both an interior and trailing backslash, causing the add_implied_include() function to under-count the trailing backslash when sizing the destination buffer.

AnalysisAI

Heap out-of-bounds write in rsync 3.2.5 through 3.4.x allows remote unauthenticated attackers to corrupt heap memory by supplying a crafted files-from entry to any exposed rsync daemon module. Critically, the flaw is exploitable against read-only daemon modules - a configuration commonly treated as a safe exposure boundary - by providing a path containing both an interior and trailing backslash, causing add_implied_include() to under-size its destination buffer and write one attacker-controlled byte past the allocation end. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The rsync daemon must be running and network-accessible on port 873/TCP. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) represents a worst-case accessibility profile: unauthenticated, low complexity, no special attack requirements, no user interaction needed. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An unauthenticated attacker connects to a publicly exposed rsync daemon on port 873 and targets any module - including those configured read-only - by submitting a crafted --files-from argument with a path containing both an interior backslash and a trailing backslash. The malformed entry causes add_implied_include() to allocate a buffer one byte too small, then write one attacker-controlled byte past the allocation boundary, potentially corrupting adjacent heap metadata. …
Remediation Upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0 or later, which is confirmed as the vendor-released security fix (https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0; full release notes at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/NEWS#3.5.0). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all rsync daemon instances running versions 3.2.5 through 3.4.x and restrict network access to trusted sources using firewall rules or network segmentation-do not rely on read-only module configuration as a security boundary. …
