The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The OpenWire protocol listener must be active on the Artemis broker and reachable by the attacker over the network - this is the default configuration. No account credentials, session tokens, or prior authentication are required; the attack succeeds at the pre-authentication stage of the connection lifecycle. Exploitation is also possible at any point after authentication by any connected client, regardless of that client's authorization level, meaning even low-privilege authenticated users can delete queues they should not have access to. The limiting factors are: (1) the attacker must be able to reach the OpenWire port (typically TCP 61616), and (2) the attacker must know or be able to enumerate valid queue names - though many brokers use predictable or discoverable queue names.

Impact

Despite the absence of a published CVSS vector, the exploitation profile is straightforward: network-reachable, no authentication required, no user interaction, low complexity - all the hallmarks of a critical availability/integrity flaw. The primary impact is availability (queue destruction disrupts application message flows, potentially causing cascading application failures) and integrity (in-flight or durable messages in deleted queues may be permanently lost). Confidentiality impact is negligible. The extremely broad affected range of Apache ActiveMQ Artemis (1.0.0 through 2.44.0 - effectively the entire project history) means the vast majority of unpatched deployments are vulnerable. No public exploit code has been identified and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, which modestly reduces immediate urgency, but the lack of authentication barrier makes opportunistic exploitation trivial once an attacker understands the RemoveSubscriptionInfo command structure, which is part of a publicly documented open-source protocol. Brokers exposed to untrusted networks with the OpenWire listener active should treat this as high priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker with network access to the Artemis broker's OpenWire listener port sends a single crafted RemoveSubscriptionInfo command specifying the name of a critical queue - for example, an order-processing or payment queue - before completing the TCP handshake's authentication phase. The broker processes the command without checking identity, deletes the target queue, and any pending messages are lost. The attacker repeats this for each queue of interest, causing a complete messaging-tier outage until the application team notices and recreates the queues.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Pre-authentication queue deletion in Apache Artemis and Apache ActiveMQ Artemis allows unauthenticated remote attackers to destroy message queues by sending a crafted Openwire RemoveSubscriptionInfo command before or after the broker's authentication stage completes. The flaw affects every Apache ActiveMQ Artemis release from 1.0.0 through 2.44.0, and the rebranded Apache Artemis releases from 2.50.0 through 2.56.0, making it an extremely wide-scope exposure for the legacy version range. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis, but the pre-authentication nature and low exploitation complexity make this a credible denial-of-service and data-loss vector in any internet- or intranet-exposed Artemis deployment.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Apache Artemis to version 2.57.0, which was released on September 9, 2026 and explicitly fixes this issue per the vendor advisory (https://artemis.apache.org). For Apache ActiveMQ Artemis users, the affected range ends at 2.44.0, implying the fix is available in 2.45.0 or later - verify the exact patched version in the Apache ActiveMQ Artemis release notes, as the advisory only states the fix version number for the Apache Artemis artifact. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable or firewall the OpenWire listener port (default TCP 61616, or the dedicated OpenWire port if configured separately) so only trusted clients can reach it. This reduces attack surface to internal networks at the cost of breaking any OpenWire-protocol clients. An additional control is to enforce network-level authentication (e.g., VPN or mTLS termination in front of the broker) before OpenWire connections reach Artemis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache ActiveMQ Artemis (and its Jakarta repackaging) is a high-performance, multi-protocol JMS-compatible message broker implementing AMQP, MQTT, STOMP, and the legacy OpenWire binary protocol originally developed for Apache ActiveMQ Classic. OpenWire is a Java-serialization-derived wire protocol used by ActiveMQ clients; it supports a RemoveSubscriptionInfo command intended to remove durable topic subscriptions. The root cause is an improper access-control ordering flaw (CWE-284 / CWE-306 class): the broker processes and acts on this OpenWire command before enforcing connection authentication and authorization checks, or continues to honor it from any authenticated session regardless of permissions. The affected Maven artifacts are org.apache.activemq:artemis-openwire-protocol (versions 1.0.0-2.44.0), org.apache.activemq:artemis-jakarta-openwire-protocol (versions 2.32.0-2.44.0), org.apache.artemis:artemis-openwire-protocol (versions 2.50.0-2.56.0), and org.apache.artemis:artemis-jakarta-openwire-protocol (versions 2.50.0-2.56.0).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Artemis message brokers (versions 1.0.0-2.44.0 and 2.50.0-2.56.0) contain a critical vulnerability allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to delete message queues, creating significant data loss and operational disruption risk. The exposure spans nearly the entire product history with no vendor patch currently available, requiring immediate compensating controls for any production deployment.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Implement network segmentation to restrict Openwire protocol to trusted internal clients only, enforce mandatory authentication at the broker level, enable detailed audit logging for RemoveSubscriptionInfo and queue management commands, establish and regularly test automated backup and message-queue recovery procedures, and disable remote Openwire access entirely if not operationally required.
