MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | All four of the following conditions must hold simultaneously: (1) the application uses axios with adapter: 'fetch' explicitly set, or runs in an environment where axios auto-selects the fetch adapter (edge runtimes such as Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge, Deno Deploy, or browser-side usage); (2) the request uses a body-bearing method (POST, PUT, or PATCH); (3) the request body is a WHATWG ReadableStream object with no reliable finite Content-Length, meaning the stream length cannot be determined before dispatch; and (4) the application sets maxBodyLength to a finite value and treats it as the primary or sole upload-size guard. Known-length body types (strings, Blob, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView, URLSearchParams, spec-compliant FormData, or requests with an explicit finite Content-Length header) are not affected even on the fetch adapter path. Exploitation yields no code execution, no confidentiality breach, and no integrity modification - impact is strictly availability through resource exhaustion. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:L) captures the key risk profile: network-reachable and low-complexity once prerequisites are met, but gated behind AT:P - the specific attack requirement that the application uses the fetch adapter, accepts a WHATWG ReadableStream body of unknown length from an attacker, and relies on maxBodyLength as its primary size control. The impact ceiling is limited availability (VA:L/SA:L) - no code execution, no credential exposure, no data exfiltration path exists. No EPSS score was provided in the input; exploitation probability cannot be quantitatively stated. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit exists at time of analysis. Real-world risk is concentrated in edge-runtime deployments (Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge, Deno Deploy) or browser-side axios usage where fetch is the default adapter, and specifically in applications that act as upload proxies relaying untrusted user-provided streams. For typical Node.js server-side axios usage with the HTTP adapter, this vulnerability does not apply, making it lower priority for the majority of the npm install base. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targeting an upload-proxy endpoint built on axios with the fetch adapter crafts a streaming POST body with no Content-Length header and begins sending data continuously. Because getBodyLength() returns undefined for the ReadableStream, the maxBodyLength check is silently skipped and axios passes the full unbounded stream to fetch(), forwarding all bytes to the upstream service. The attacker sustains the stream long enough to exhaust the application's outbound bandwidth allocation or consume the upstream API's rate-limited quota, degrading availability for legitimate users. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 01, 2026
The fetch adapter in axios 1.7.0 through 1.17.x silently skips the maxBodyLength enforcement when a WHATWG ReadableStream body has no determinable Content-Length, allowing attacker-supplied stream data to bypass configured upload size limits. Applications that proxy or relay untrusted stream data via axios with the fetch adapter and rely solely on maxBodyLength as the size guard are exposed to uncontrolled outbound egress and potential exhaustion of upstream API quotas or bandwidth. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; CVSS 4.0 scores this at 6.3 with limited availability impact (VA:L) and an attack prerequisite (AT:P) reflecting the specific conditions required.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to axios 1.18.0, which resolves the issue by adding a ReadableStream branch to getBodyLength() so that maxBodyLength is enforced for stream bodies; the fix is in commit 32fc489632377d214db55bfa4e2c48486a7d7ce2 (merged via PR #11000). Advisory: https://github.com/axios/axios/security/advisories/GHSA-jqh4-m9w3-8hp9. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most direct compensating control is to explicitly configure axios to use the HTTP adapter (adapter: 'http') in Node.js environments, which eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely; note this will break deployments on edge runtimes where the fetch adapter is required. As a defense-in-depth measure independent of axios version, implement request body size limits at the HTTP server or reverse-proxy layer - for example, nginx client_max_body_size or Node.js http.maxHeaderSize and equivalent body limits - so that maxBodyLength is never the sole enforcement mechanism for untrusted stream uploads. Trade-off: upstream proxy limits may reject legitimate large uploads that would otherwise be handled by application logic.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling), traced to a missing code branch in lib/adapters/fetch.js. The getBodyLength() function handles Blob, spec-compliant FormData, ArrayBuffer, URLSearchParams, and strings, but has no branch for WHATWG ReadableStream objects. Consequently, resolveBodyLength() returns undefined for live streams, and the maxBodyLength guard - which only fires when the resolved outbound length is a finite number exceeding the configured limit - is silently bypassed. The onUploadProgress wrapper (trackStream()) also does not enforce the cap; it only reports byte progress. The HTTP adapter's stream upload path in Node.js is entirely separate and is not affected. Affected product per CPE: cpe:2.3:a:axios:axios:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering npm versions >= 1.7.0 and < 1.18.0 - versions before 1.7.0 predate the fetch adapter entirely and are not affected.

2DescriptionCVE.org
axios versions 1.7.0 before 1.18.0 fail to enforce maxBodyLength for WHATWG ReadableStream request bodies in the fetch adapter when Content-Length cannot be determined. Attackers can supply unknown-length stream data to bypass upload size limits and cause uncontrolled network egress or resource exhaustion.
