MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | User interaction is required (UI:R in CVSS 3.1) - the victim must open or process the malicious CAF file using the vulnerable FFmpeg decoder. No authentication or special privileges are needed to deliver the file, but the victim must use an affected version of FFmpeg with the MACE6 decoder active (default configuration). The attack relies on the decoder's incorrect handling of the desc chunk fields; no additional environmental factors are needed. |
| Impact | CVSS 3.1 score is 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), reflecting network delivery, low complexity, no privileges, but required user interaction, with high impact. EPSS probability is only 0.42% (35th percentile), indicating low likelihood of mass exploitation. No CISA KEV listing or public exploit code has been identified, which suggests no active attacks or weaponized proof-of-concept. In SSVC terms: exploitation is 'none', technical impact is 'total', but user interaction makes automatable exploitation less feasible. While the vulnerability is serious for environments that automatically process CAF files from untrusted sources (e.g., transcoding pipelines), the real-world risk is tempered by the low EPSS and UI requirement. Patch availability further reduces urgency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker distributes a specially crafted CAF audio file containing malicious bytes_per_packet and frames_per_packet values, e.g., as a media attachment or via a compromised website. When a victim or an automated process opens the file using a vulnerable FFmpeg build, the MACE6 decoder overflows an integer during buffer size calculation, leading to a heap out-of-bounds write and potential arbitrary code execution in the context of the FFmpeg process. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jul 26, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in FFmpeg versions up to 8.1.2 via a crafted CAF file can allow remote code execution. Exploitation requires user interaction (opening a malicious file). No known active exploitation or public exploit exists, but the vulnerability carries a critical severity score (CVSS 8.8).
RemediationAI
Upgrade to an FFmpeg build that includes commit aafb5c655edc76a753275c383ebb139feb032718, or apply that patch directly. No official workaround is documented; temporarily disabling the MACE6 decoder or blocking CAF files with oversized desc chunk values could mitigate risk in high-security environments but may disrupt functionality. The patch can be obtained from https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/aafb5c655edc76a753275c383ebb139feb032718.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability lies in FFmpeg's MACE6 audio decoder when parsing CAF (Core Audio Format) files. A signed integer overflow (CWE-190) occurs in the mace_decode_frame() function because the decoder computes output sample counts using attacker-controlled bytes_per_packet and frames_per_packet values from the CAF desc chunk. The resulting undersized heap buffer allocation leads to a heap out-of-bounds write. FFmpeg is widely embedded in media applications as indicated by its CPE string (cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) covering all vulnerable versions.

DescriptionCVE.org
FFmpeg through 8.1.2, fixed in commit aafb5c6, contains a signed integer overflow vulnerability in the MACE6 audio decoder that allows attackers to corrupt heap memory by supplying a crafted CAF file with a malicious bytes_per_packet value. Attackers can craft a CAF file with oversized bytes_per_packet and frames_per_packet values in the desc chunk to trigger an integer overflow in mace_decode_frame() during output sample count computation, resulting in an undersized buffer allocation and heap out-of-bounds write that could enable code execution.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.
