DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

smb: client: fix double-free in SMB2_open() replay

A response-bearing attempt can return a replayable error and free its response buffer. If SMB2_open_init() fails before the next send, cleanup retains the previous buffer type and frees that response again.

Reset response bookkeeping before each attempt to prevent the stale free.

AnalysisAI

Double-free in the Linux kernel SMB client's SMB2_open() replay handler allows remote attackers to corrupt memory by inducing a user to mount a malicious SMB share. The flaw affects unpatched kernel versions with the cifs module loaded and can lead to arbitrary code execution, information disclosure, or denial of service. No active exploitation has been reported (not in CISA KEV), and EPSS score is 0.21%, indicating low exploitation probability; official kernel patches are available.
