MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open a crafted LibreOffice Calc document that embeds a saved external data link of the sql type naming a local folder of text files as a database; on vulnerable versions this link is automatically restored at document load, reading the targeted local text file into the sheet. Limiting factors: (1) user interaction is required - the victim must open the attacker-supplied document (UI:P); (2) the attacker must know or guess a valid local filesystem path to a sensitive text file on the victim's machine; (3) meaningful information disclosure requires a mechanism to return the populated sheet to the attacker, since the flaw itself only reads the file locally; (4) fixed versions eliminate the condition by restoring only csv, html, and xml data providers, so only pre-fix versions are exposed. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity information disclosure flaw (CWE-200) in LibreOffice Calc, rated CVSS 6.7 by The Document Foundation using a CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:H/SI:N/SA:N). The vector signals local attack vector, low complexity, and - critically - passive user interaction (UI:P), meaning a victim must open a crafted document for the saved sql-type external data link to be auto-restored and resolve a local folder of text files into the sheet. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score supplied, so there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation; the realistic threat is a targeted spear-phishing style document delivery rather than mass exploitation. Two signals warrant caution. First, the vendor marked PR:L (authenticated/some privilege) yet the actual attack is a classic malicious-document scenario where the attacker needs no privileges and the victim supplies all the interaction - the PR:L choice appears conservative and should be verified against the vendor advisory. Second, VC:H/SC:H claims high confidentiality impact, but the description only states that a local text file is read into the sheet; actual disclosure to the attacker requires a separate exfiltration path (e.g., the victim re-sharing the document or a secondary outbound link), which materially lowers real-world impact. Net: a legitimate but not high-priority issue - patch in normal cycles, prioritize for users who routinely open untrusted spreadsheets. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker emails a victim a LibreOffice Calc document that contains a saved external data link of the sql type pointing at a predictable local path (e.g., a folder of config or credential text files). When the victim opens the document on a vulnerable version, the link is automatically restored and the targeted local text file's contents are loaded into a cell range; the data can then be harvested if the document is returned, synced, or paired with an outbound link. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Opening a crafted LibreOffice Calc document can cause a local text file on the victim's machine to be read into the spreadsheet, leaking its contents to anyone who later views or receives the file. The document must embed a saved external data link of the sql type that points at a local folder of text files as a database; vulnerable versions automatically restore that link at load time, whereas fixed versions restore only the csv, html and xml data providers. Exploitation requires the victim to open the attacker-supplied document (user interaction, UI:P in the vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector of 6.7, and UI:R in the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment), so exposure is limited to targeted social-engineering scenarios where the attacker also knows or guesses a useful local path and has a way to retrieve the populated sheet; no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix by upgrading to the LibreOffice release that implements the advisory's change, where only the csv, html and xml data providers are restored when a Calc document is loaded; the exact patched version numbers per branch are listed in The Document Foundation advisory at https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/security/advisories/cve-2026-63268 (patch available per vendor advisory; no single fixed version string is provided in the source data). Because this is an information-disclosure issue triggered by opening a malicious document, the strongest compensating control is to treat untrusted Calc files as hostile: open them only in a sandboxed or disposable environment without access to sensitive local paths, and configure Calc to not update links automatically (Tools - Options - Calc - General - Update links when loading, set to "Never update") so the saved link is not resolved on load; the trade-off is that legitimate linked spreadsheets will no longer refresh silently and users must update links manually. Restricting which directories LibreOffice can read via OS-level access controls or running it under a confined profile (for example a container or an app-armor/SELinux sandbox) reduces the value of any known local path to an attacker but can break legitimate database and file-based data sources. Since a crafted document only populates the local sheet, environments that block outbound return channels for the resulting file further reduce residual risk; there is no server-side or network mitigation because the flaw requires the victim to open the file locally.

Technical ContextAI · show details
LibreOffice Calc supports cell ranges linked to external data sources through its "Link to External Data" feature, and the resulting link definition is persisted inside the ODF spreadsheet so it is re-established each time the document is opened. Besides the csv, html and xml providers normally used for web or text imports, the application also exposes a database (sql) provider that takes a connection/database descriptor; because file-based database drivers can treat a directory of text files as a database, a link of the sql type can name a local folder and have the spreadsheet engine read a text file from it directly into the sheet. The root cause is a CWE-200 exposure of sensitive information: the link-restoration logic at document load time allowed data providers that reach arbitrary local storage rather than only the benign network/text formats. The vendor's fix constrains the set of providers restored on load to csv, html and xml, removing the sql path from the automatic restoration flow. The vulnerability is local in nature (AV:L) but alters scope (S:C) and yields high confidentiality impact (C:H) with no integrity or availability effect, meaning the practical damage is disclosure of local file contents that get embedded in the document and can travel with it.

2DescriptionCVE.org
LibreOffice Calc can link a cell range to an external data source, and the link is saved in the document. A link of the sql type could name a folder of local text files as a database, so opening a document could read a local text file into the sheet. In fixed versions only the csv, html and xml data providers are restored when a document is loaded.
