DescriptionNVD

The "profiling.sampling" module (Python 3.15+) and "asyncio introspection capabilities" (3.14+, "python -m asyncio ps" and "python -m asyncio pstree") features could be used to read and write addresses in a privileged process if that process connected to a malicious or "infected" Python process via the remote debugging feature. This vulnerability requires persistently and repeatedly connecting to the process to be exploited, even after the connecting process crashes with high likelihood due to ASLR.

AnalysisAI

Memory corruption in Python's asyncio introspection and profiling.sampling modules (3.14-3.15) allows a local attacker with high privileges to read and write arbitrary memory in a connected privileged Python process via remote debugging. Exploitation requires persistent, repeated connections and high tolerance for crashes due to ASLR; no public exploit code has been identified. SSVC framework rates technical impact as total, but exploitation remains none-indicating low real-world priority despite severe capability impact.

Technical ContextAI

The vulnerability resides in CPython's asyncio introspection features ("python -m asyncio ps" and "python -m asyncio pstree" in 3.14+) and the new profiling.sampling module (3.15+), both of which expose mechanisms for inspecting and potentially manipulating memory state in remote processes connected via Python's remote debugging interface. The root cause is a stack overflow (CWE-121) in buffer handling-likely in the data structures or serialization used when introspection queries read/write process memory without proper bounds checking. When a privileged process (e.g., root) connects to a malicious or compromised Python instance, the attacker can craft queries that overflow stack buffers in the target, enabling arbitrary read/write primitive. ASLR defeats reliable exploitation, necessitating repeated reconnection attempts to brute-force address layouts.

RemediationAI

Upgrade CPython to a patched version released by the Python Software Foundation following the fix at https://github.com/python/cpython/commit/289fd2c97a7e5aecb8b69f94f5e838ccfeee7e67. The security advisory at https://mail.python.org/archives/list/security-announce@python.org/thread/OG4RHARYSNIE22GGOMVMCRH76L5HKPLM/ provides specific patched release details. As an interim mitigation, disable Python's remote debugging feature and restrict access to asyncio introspection tools ("python -m asyncio ps/pstree") to trusted users only. Audit Python process configurations to identify any that expose debugging endpoints over network interfaces.
