DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in libtheora. This heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability exists within the AVI (Audio Video Interleave) parser, specifically in the avi_parse_input_file() function. A local attacker could exploit this by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted AVI file containing a truncated header sub-chunk. This could lead to a denial-of-service (application crash) or potentially leak sensitive information from the heap.

AnalysisAI

Heap-based out-of-bounds read in libtheora's AVI parser allows local attackers with limited privileges to trigger application crashes or leak heap memory via specially crafted AVI files with truncated header sub-chunks. The vulnerability affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 6 through 10 and requires user interaction (opening a malicious file), with real-world impact limited to denial-of-service and potential information disclosure rather than code execution.

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Risk Assessment The CVSS v3.1 score of 5.6 (Medium) reflects a local attack vector with low complexity and required limited privileges, but the impact assessment shows contradictions worth analyzing. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario A user receives a malicious AVI file via email or downloads it from a compromised website. When the user opens the file in a media player or processing application (such as ffmpeg or Audacity), libtheora's AVI parser processes the header and encounters a truncated header sub-chunk. …
Remediation Apply security updates from Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the libtheora package. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Threat intelligence, references, and detailed analysis are available after sign-in.
