MariaDB Connector/Node.js CVE-2026-55854
MEDIUMSeverity by source
AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
MITM or rogue-server positioning required raises AC:H; no attacker privileges needed (PR:N); impact is confidentiality-only as only the password is disclosed with no integrity or availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org
MariaDB Connector/Node.js is used to connect applications developed on Node.js to MariaDB and MySQL databases. Prior to 3.2.4, 3.3.3, 3.4.6, and 3.5.3, MariaDB Connector/Node.js can disclose an account password when PAM dialog authentication is negotiated over an insecure transport. In lib/cmd/handshake/auth/pam-password-auth.js and lib/cmd/handshake/authentication.js, the SendPamAuthPacketFactory behavior for the server-side plugin dialog lacked the secure-transport gate applied to mysql_clear_password. With the default sslMode=DISABLE and restrictedAuth=null settings, a hostile or on-path server can send an Authentication Switch Request for dialog over plain TCP, causing the connector to return the account password in cleartext. Properly verified TLS and a local Unix socket prevent this path, while fingerprint-only server identity validation is not sufficient. This issue is fixed in versions 3.2.4, 3.3.3, 3.4.6, and 3.5.3.
AnalysisAI
PAM dialog authentication in MariaDB Connector/Node.js discloses account passwords in cleartext when connections use plain TCP, because the SendPamAuthPacketFactory handler omitted the secure-transport gate that was already applied to the sibling mysql_clear_password plugin. Applications connecting to MariaDB with default settings (sslMode=DISABLE, restrictedAuth=null) over untrusted network paths are exposed to credential theft by any on-path attacker or rogue server that issues an Authentication Switch Request for the dialog plugin. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: the application must use an unpatched version of mariadb Connector/Node.js (below 3.2.4, 3.3.3, 3.4.6, or 3.5.3 depending on the active branch); the database connection must use plain TCP with sslMode=DISABLE (the default) or TLS where server identity is validated only via a self-signed-certificate fingerprint (rejectUnauthorized: false with pinning) - both are non-protective transports for this vulnerability; and the attacker must either occupy an on-path network position or induce the client to connect to an attacker-controlled server. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 score of 5.9 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) correctly reflects high confidentiality impact offset by high attack complexity - exploitation is network-reachable but requires either an on-path MITM position or the ability to substitute a hostile database server, which is a meaningful prerequisite. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade the 'mariadb' npm package to the patched release on your active branch: 3.5.x users should update to 3.5.3, 3.4.x users to 3.4.6, 3.3.x users to 3.3.3, and users on 3.2.x or earlier to 3.2.4. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
