Local workspace access plus a victim-run install (AV:L, UI:R); AC:H for the attack-requirement of a writable workspace and present package-manager target; PR:N since the attacker needs no OpenClaw auth; high C/I, no availability impact.

Ecosystem-wide dependent count for version 2026.4.29.
DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw before 2026.4.29 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the install helper that allows workspace .env files to override the npm_execpath configuration used for bundled runtime dependency installation. Attackers with workspace access can execute unintended local package-manager executables during dependency setup to compromise the build environment.
AnalysisAI
Untrusted search path in OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.4.29 lets workspace-local .env files override the npm_execpath variable consulted by the install helper, redirecting bundled dependency installation to an attacker-controlled package-manager binary. An attacker who can place files in the workspace can hijack the runtime dependency setup step to compromise the build environment under the developer's identity, with no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires (1) the attacker to be able to write files into the OpenClaw project workspace - for example via a malicious commit, pull request, or shared filesystem access - specifically a crafted .env at a location the install helper will load, (2) a victim user or CI job to invoke OpenClaw's bundled-runtime-dependency install helper (the install/setup step that resolves npm_execpath) so the poisoned env is read, and (3) the targeted package-manager executable referenced by the overridden npm_execpath to exist on the local filesystem (the path-traversal lets the value point outside the workspace). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) describes a local, user-interaction-driven, high confidentiality/integrity impact issue and is consistent with a build-time supply-chain style flaw rather than a remotely reachable bug - base score 7.0 is appropriate. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker contributes or commits a crafted .env file plus a small attacker-controlled executable into an OpenClaw project workspace (for example via a pull request or a shared dev environment); when a maintainer or CI runner subsequently runs the OpenClaw install helper, the helper reads the malicious .env, npm_execpath is rerouted via path traversal to the attacker's binary, and that binary is executed in place of npm/yarn as the dependency installer. The attacker thereby gains code execution in the build environment with the privileges of the user running the install, enabling secrets theft, lateral movement, or tampering with build artifacts. … |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade OpenClaw to 2026.4.29 or later, which is the fixed release identified in GHSA-24vr-rprv-67rf (https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-24vr-rprv-67rf) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-arbitrary-package-manager-execution-via-workspace-env-npm-execpath). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
