DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition vulnerability in the rrsync restricted shell wrapper that allows authenticated clients to escape enforced directory restrictions by substituting a symlink for a path component after validation but before transfer processing. Attackers can additionally leverage unrestricted flags such as --copy-unsafe-links, -D, and --log-file through rrsync to read or write files outside the permitted directory subtree.

AnalysisAI

Directory escape in rsync's rrsync restricted shell wrapper before version 3.5.0 allows authenticated users to read and write files outside their enforced directory boundaries via two distinct paths. The first is a TOCTOU race condition that substitutes a symlink after path validation but before file transfer; the second is direct abuse of unrestricted rsync flags - --copy-unsafe-links, -D, and --log-file - that rrsync fails to sanitize, requiring no race timing at all. …

Impact
Read or write sensitive host files

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the target system to be running rsync with the rrsync wrapper configured as an SSH ForceCommand - typically an entry such as 'command="rrsync /permitted/dir"' in an authorized_keys file. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment CVSS 4.0 rates this 8.6 (High) with AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N and VC:H/VI:H/VA:N: network-accessible by low-privileged authenticated users with no special attack conditions, yielding full confidentiality and integrity compromise on the vulnerable system. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with valid SSH credentials configured to invoke rrsync connects and submits a sync request targeting the permitted directory, passing --log-file /etc/cron.d/backdoor in the rsync invocation; rrsync fails to block this flag, causing rsync to write attacker-controlled content to the cron directory outside the restricted subtree. Alternatively, the attacker creates a symlink within the permitted directory pointing to /root/.ssh/authorized_keys and initiates a transfer, exploiting the TOCTOU window to substitute the symlink after rrsync validates the path but before the file operation completes. …
Remediation The primary fix is to upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0, available at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and documented in the security advisory at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/security/advisories/GHSA-9cgc-64g4-3gv5. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: identify all systems running rrsync (execute 'rsync --version'), document which user accounts have SSH access configured to use rrsync, and map sensitive data stored outside intended directory boundaries. …
