Network-reachable management interface (AV:N) but exploitable only by an authenticated high-privilege admin (PR:H); low complexity, and root command execution gives full C/I/A impact.
Primary rating from Vendor (dell).

Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, versions 7.7.1.0 through 8.7, LTS2026 release version 8.6.1.0 through 8.6.1.10, LTS2025 release version 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.30, LTS2024 release versions 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.70 contain an improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command ('OS command Injection') vulnerability. A remote high privileged attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability, leading to protection mechanism bypass. This is a Critical vulnerability as it allows an attacker to invoke arbitrary command execution with root privileges; so Dell recommends customers to upgrade at the earliest opportunity.
AnalysisAI
OS command injection in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain (versions 7.7.1.0 through 8.7, plus the LTS2026, LTS2025, and LTS2024 branches) lets an already-authenticated, high-privileged remote user break out of the appliance's restricted management context and run arbitrary commands as root. Dell rates it Critical because the flaw defeats the platform's protection mechanism and yields full root-level code execution on the backup appliance. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated account with high administrative privileges (CVSS PR:H) on the Dell PowerProtect Data Domain appliance and network reachability to its management interface (AV:N); it needs no user interaction (UI:N) and has low complexity (AC:L). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.2 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H - network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but requiring high privileges (PR:H), which is the single largest limiting factor. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker who has obtained high-privilege administrative credentials to the Data Domain appliance (via credential theft, insider access, or password reuse) connects to the network-reachable management interface and submits an administrative command containing embedded shell metacharacters. The injected payload is executed by the underlying OS as root, letting the attacker disable retention-lock/immutability protections, tamper with or delete backups, and establish persistence. … |
| Remediation | Patch available per vendor advisory: upgrade DD OS to the fixed build for your release line as documented in Dell DSA-2026-278 (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000481268/dsa-2026-278-security-update-for-dell-powerprotect-data-domain-multiple-vulnerabilities); the provided input does not include the exact remediated version numbers per branch, so confirm the target build from that advisory before upgrading. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
