AnalysisAIv2 – Jul 27, 2026

Arbitrary code execution in libheif 1.19.0 through 1.21.2 via a crafted HEIF file with uncompressed, tiled, component-interleaved, 4:2:0 encoding allows an attacker to overwrite a C++ vtable pointer and redirect control flow. Exploitation requires user interaction to open the malicious file, and no public exploit code is known, though EPSS indicates a low probability of widespread exploitation.

Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
v1 Jul 22, 2026 - 01:48 CVSS 6.1

Heap out-of-bounds write in libheif 1.19.0-1.21.2 enables vtable pointer hijacking when a crafted HEIF file using the uncompressed unci codec in tiled, component-interleaved, 4:2:0 configuration is parsed by the tile decoder. Overwriting an adjacent C++ object's vtable pointer allows redirection of the next virtual method call to an attacker-controlled address, making arbitrary code execution feasible in any application that processes untrusted HEIF files. No public exploit exists at time of analysis, but the vtable hijack primitive substantially elevates real-world impact above what the assigned CVSS 6.1 score reflects.

DescriptionNVD

libheif is a HEIF and AVIF file format decoder and encoder. In versions 1.19.0 through 1.21.2, a crafted HEIF file (uncompressed unci codec, tiled, component-interleaved, 4:2:0) triggers a heap out-of-bounds write in libheif's uncompressed tile decoder. The write overwrites the C++ vtable pointer of an adjacent unc_decoder_component_interleave object; the next virtual call dispatches to an attacker-chosen address. Version 1.22.0 patches the issue.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
