DescriptionCVE.org

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Prior to versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5, Suricata's HTTP/2 decompression path could grow the decompressed response-body buffer without an effective upper bound. A crafted HTTP/2 DATA payload using a high compression ratio, such as gzip, deflate, or brotli compressed data, could cause Suricata to allocate excessive memory while decompressing the payload. Versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5 contain a fix. As a workaround, disable HTTP2.

AnalysisAI

Memory exhaustion via decompression bomb in Suricata prior to 7.0.16 and 8.0.5 allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to crash or degrade the IDS/IPS engine by transmitting crafted HTTP/2 DATA frames with extreme compression ratios. The HTTP/2 response-body decompression path (supporting gzip, deflate, and brotli) lacked an effective upper bound on allocated buffer size, enabling a data-amplification (zip-bomb) attack against monitored network segments. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Suricata must be actively inspecting HTTP/2 traffic, which requires that HTTP/2 application-layer parsing and decompression be enabled - this is the default configuration in current Suricata versions. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H scores 7.5, which accurately characterizes the risk profile: fully remote, unauthenticated, zero-click, and trivially repeatable with no special conditions beyond routing traffic through a Suricata sensor. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade Suricata to version 7.0.16 (7.x branch) or 8.0.5 (8.x branch), as confirmed by the OISF security advisory GHSA-45p7-j5wm-8wrx and the forum release post at https://forum.suricata.io/t/suricata-8-0-5-and-7-0-16-released/6315. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Suricata deployments running versions prior to 7.0.16 or 8.0.5 and assess their security criticality. …
